PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Wood Chuck (ranked 70 p4p, 213 weight class) and Kawainui Perry (ranked 9 p4p, 30 weight class). Chuck comes to the cage accompanied by Who Needs A Girl Like You - Indian Wars. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Wood Chuck!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 7 - 2, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kawainui Perry!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Tiny Johnson and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Chuck gets tackled into the cage by Perry. Perry maintains the clinch.
Perry digs a right hand underneath Chuck's ribcage. Chuck let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Chuck pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Chuck looks to land a right hand but Perry moved out of range.
Perry connects with a leg kick.
Perry walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
A swing and a miss from Chuck.
Perry wants to counter with a clinch but Chuck pushes him away.
Chuck lands a nice shot to the body.
Chuck moves into range and connects with a jab.
Perry looks to land a body kick but Chuck moved away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chuck misses with a looping right.
Chuck missing with a left hand there. Perry was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Perry throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Chuck counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Chuck looking to sit in guard and control but Perry gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Chuck isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Perry stacks Chuck on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Perry!

Chuck is trying to reverse the position but instead Perry has taken his back - oops!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Chuck is working hard here to advance position.

Perry is persistently looking for the submission but Chuck is defending it well.
Chuck trying to control the hands but Perry breaks the grip.
Perry doesn't have the hooks in and Chuck manages to turn into his guard.
Chuck with a flurry of punches that miss.
Chuck lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Chuck throws an elbow that misses. Perry uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Chuck's guard. Nice move by Perry!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Chuck is looking for a triangle but Perry pushes his legs off easily.
Chuck looking for a sweep. Not yet Chuck, not yet.
Chuck is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Chuck looking to hit a scissor sweep but Perry is one step ahead there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Chuck has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Perry has passed into side control.

Perry manages to capitalize on a mistake by Chuck to take his back!

A close round but Kawainui Perry will probably get the nod.

Perry wants to clinch up but Chuck keeps it at a distance.

The fighters circle momentarily. Chuck darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Some bone on bone action there as Chuck checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Perry has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Chuck finds it's way round the side to connect with Perry's head.

Chuck changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Perry tries to avoid it but Chuck manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Perry to the ground. Perry escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Perry wants to counter with a clinch but Chuck pushes him away.
Chuck slips under a jab from Perry.
Chuck attempts a counter takedown but Perry avoids it well and moves away.

Perry throws a body shot but no joy.

Perry tries to counter with a clinch but Chuck shakes him off and moves away.
Perry looks to land a body kick but Chuck moved away.
Chuck tries to counter with a takedown but Perry is quick to defend against it.
Nice defenses there by Perry.

Chuck throws a body punch but Perry moves out of range.
Perry bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Perry avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Chuck manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Perry on his heels. He'll look to pass Perry's guard now, I'm sure.

Chuck rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Perry moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Chuck throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

Perry takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Perry loads up on a big right hand but Chuck slips the punch.
Chuck lands a body shot.
Perry throws a leg kick

and Chuck decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Perry's guard.

Chuck stands up over his opponent, looking to dive in with a big punch. Here he comes, superman style! Oh, the punch misses and Perry has got him in a triangle choke for good measure! Oh no! Chuck manages to get his head free but now Perry has transitioned to an armbar! Chuck grimaces and is forced to tap! Beautiful Jiu Jitsu from Perry! I'd be surprised if that didn't end up as submission of the night!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:46 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Kawainui Perry!
After winning the bout, Kawainui Perry thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
