PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rafa Peziev (ranked 1321 p4p, 1139 weight class) and William Ward (ranked 124 p4p, 113 weight class). Peziev's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Bullseye - KDrew. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Rafa Peziev! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 12 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, William Ward! The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Ivan Kurochkin and Dmitry Maklakov.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Peziev clinches up against the cage. Peziev is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Ward pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Ward escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Peziev shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Peziev was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Peziev working the ground and pound but Ward is defending the strikes. Peziev landing strikes. Ward is trying to get back to half guard. Ward can't do much from the bottom here. Peziev is chipping away with strikes.
The ground and pound from Peziev seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Peziev working the ground and pound.
Peziev tries for a kimura but Ward is defending well. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Ward is trying to improve his position.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Ward sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Ward works his way to full guard. Good work. Peziev might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Ward looking for a sweep. Not yet Ward, not yet. Ward keeping full guard, as Peziev tries to pass. Ward wants to sweep but no luck. Ward working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Peziev. Peziev wants to control from the top but Ward keeps moving. Ward bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Peziev's guard.
 The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Peziev is trying to control the position but Ward postures up.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Ward is looking to work some ground and pound but Peziev has wrist control. Ward stands and throws Peziev's legs to the side, diving into side control. Peziev wants to get back to his feet but Ward drags him back down. Ward wants to lay and pray for a moment but Peziev keeps working. Ward works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Peziev is trying to improve his position. Peziev manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Ward is trying to get back to full guard. Peziev with the ground and pound but Ward uses the opportunity to regain guard. Our spies down at at Vancouver Island Fight Club inform us that Ward has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off? Peziev postures up and lands a big shot to Ward's brow. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

 That's three minutes gone in the round. Peziev content to stall in guard here. Peziev stopping the sweep attempt from Ward. Peziev trying to control the position from guard on top but Ward is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Ward is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Ward looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Ward is trying to control the action in half guard but Peziev is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Ward is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Ward moves into side control, avoiding a weak kimura attempt from Peziev. Peziev is looking to reverse the position. Ward lands an elbow. Ward has knee on belly and moves into mount. Peziev sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Rafa Peziev will probably get the nod. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Peziev misses with a takedown attempt - Ward sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Ward feints the counter takedown.

Peziev is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Ward stopping the sweep attempt from Peziev. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ward tries to free his leg and advance position but Peziev is retaining full guard. Peziev trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Peziev looking for a sweep. Not yet Peziev, not yet. William Ward has got the better of the ground game so far. Ward lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Peziev is looking for a triangle here but Ward uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Ward scoring with punches and elbows. Ward has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Peziev regains half guard. Ward trying to control from half guard but Peziev is working away.
Peziev actively working from the bottom here. Peziev taking some punishment here, with Ward in his half guard. Ward looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Peziev looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Ward scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Ward works his foot free and advances to mount. Ward lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Peziev takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Peziev regains half guard. Ward keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Peziev is refusing to be controlled, as Ward sits in half guard. Ground and pound from Ward. Ward lands with a punch from half guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Ward is looking for a kimura but Peziev is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ward to get the leverage. Peziev is not content to let Ward control the position. Peziev is looking to improve his position.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Ward looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Ward content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Ward winds up and cracks Peziev with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Peziev is looking to improve his position.
Peziev has hold of Ward's hands but Ward slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Ward wants to work for an arm triangle but Peziev is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Ward seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Ward is keen to just control but Peziev is a slippery customer. Ward is thwarting Peziev's attempts to control the position.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Peziev wants to get back to full guard but Ward has mounted him! Ward punishing his opponent with strikes. A nice elbow there by Ward. Ward looking to control but Peziev is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Ward has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Peziev's face.
 Peziev is rocked! Ward can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Peziev is looking to escape. Oh Peziev is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Peziev tries to lock up and control but Ward gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Peziev can't escape the position.
Peziev seems to have got his legs back now. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Peziev is in a horrible position here. Ward smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Ward controlling the position easily from mount. Ward can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Peziev is looking to escape. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
William Ward showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Peziev has managed to clinch.
Ward breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Rafa Peziev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Peziev waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Ward. Ward drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Peziev defends it well.
Peziev drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Ward tries to land a sweep but no joy. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Peziev trying to control the position from guard on top but Ward is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Ward is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Ward preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
 That's one minute gone in the round.
Peziev drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Ward manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Peziev has Ward in his guard.
Ward working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Ward sitting in guard here, content to control. Ward slips nicely into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ward is working for a submission of some sort.

Ward tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Peziev stops Ward from passing to mount. Peziev wants to control but Ward postures up. Peziev is trying to improve his position. Ward trying to control the position but Peziev is working away. Ward has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Peziev prevents Ward from moving into mount. Peziev is looking to reverse the position.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Ward wants to control but Peziev is keeping him busy. Peziev is looking for a sweep. Ward is looking to take a break and control but Peziev is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Peziev is looking to regain half guard here but Ward keeps moving and retains side control. Peziev is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Peziev trying to get back to full guard but Ward takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Peziev sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Ward working over Peziev with some ground and pound. Peziev looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Nice strikes from Ward there.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Peziev is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Ward wants to free his trapped foot but Peziev is holding on for dear life with his legs. Peziev tries to get to full guard but Ward has control of the leg. Ward moves into side control, avoiding the strikes from Peziev.

Ward is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Peziev knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Peziev prevents Ward from improving position. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Peziev gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
And that's the end of the fight! William Ward comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I think Ward has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
