PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rico Holloway (ranked 2743 p4p, 4051 weight class) and Diego Cordero (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Rico Holloway!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Diego Cordero!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Tarja Halkonen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Holloway has Cordero up against the cage in a clinch.
Holloway tries to pull guard but Cordero holds him up against the cage and eventually Holloway drops back down to his feet.
Cordero wants a takedown but no success here.
Holloway has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Cordero avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Cordero's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Cordero pushes Holloway up against the cage in a clinch.
Cordero is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Holloway gets control of Cordero's arms and successfully pulls guard. Holloway will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Cordero cracks Holloway with a solid left hand.
Cordero lands a couple of decent looking shots.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Holloway is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Cordero has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Cordero slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Cordero tries to free his leg and advance position but Holloway is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cordero postures up and lands a big shot to Holloway's brow.
Holloway is looking to sweep but instead, Cordero has passed into half guard.
Holloway on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Cordero prevents Holloway from improving his position.
Cordero is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Holloway is trying to maintain the position but Cordero is very close to passing his half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Holloway has hold of Cordero's hands but Cordero slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Cordero is nestled in close to Holloway, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Cordero perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Holloway knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cordero on the ground.
Cordero is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Cordero landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Holloway is striking from the bottom but he's now found himself mounted! Oh dear - not enough focus on defense there.
Holloway tries to hold on but Cordero pushes him away.
Cordero in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Cordero controlling the position easily from mount.
Cordero landing strikes from the mount and Holloway is in trouble!

Holloway is rocked!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Holloway is looking to get to half guard.
Oh Holloway is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Cordero tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Holloway seems to have got his legs back now.
Cordero in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Cordero controlling the position easily from mount.
Cordero cracks Holloway with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Holloway takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Cordero's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Diego Cordero!
An out of breath Diego Cordero thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
