RIO 6 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the lightweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 17 wins and 22 losses; Klaas Jan Tijhoff! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 23 wins and 28 losses; Mean Gean! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Edson Gomes and Luis Engracia.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Tijhoff closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Gean quickly recovers to half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Tijhoff (2) vs (0) Gean Tijhoff definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Tijhoff looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Gean makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Gean. Gean is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Tijhoff (2) vs (2) Gean Gean looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Tijhoff has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gean is working away from the top position though. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gean trying to control the action but Tijhoff is working from the bottom.
Gean is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Gean wants to control but Tijhoff is keeping him busy. Gean might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Tijhoff haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Tijhoff is trying to maintain the position but Gean is very close to passing his half guard. Gean wants to lay and pray for a moment but Tijhoff keeps working.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Gean is looking to stall here but Tijhoff recovers full guard. Tijhoff has his hands on Gean's head, controlling the position. Tijhoff wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Gean is now in half guard. My spies in Steel Penn Training Den inform me that Gean has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Tijhoff has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gean is working away from the top position though.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Gean wants to pass to mount but Tijhoff is defending the position. Gean slows the pace down in half guard. Gean is looking to take a break and control but Tijhoff is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Gean is pressing down on Tijhoff's thigh, looking to free his foot. Tijhoff is holding on for now. Gean is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gean is pressing down on Tijhoff's thigh, looking to free his foot. Tijhoff is holding on for now.

Tijhoff tries to get to full guard but Gean has control of the leg. Gean wants to pass to mount but Tijhoff is defending the position. Gean controlling the action here. Tijhoff is trying is best to control the position here.
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Tijhoff tries to roll over but Gean keeps him under control. Gean wants to take a breather but Tijhoff is having none of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gean wants to pass the guard but Tijhoff is defending well. Tijhoff is positioning himself well to prevent Gean advancing to mount. Tijhoff is looking to control Gean's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Tijhoff avoid being mounted?

Gean wants to control but Tijhoff is keeping him busy. Tijhoff is trying to get back to full guard. Well, if Gean is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Gean is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Tijhoff defends it well. Gean is keen to just control but Tijhoff is a slippery customer.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Tijhoff wants to get back to full guard. Gean trying to control the action but Tijhoff is working from the bottom.
Gean is looking for a kimura but Tijhoff is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gean to get the leverage. Gean is looking to stall here but Tijhoff recovers full guard. Gean is looking to advance position but Tijhoff has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: Tijhoff (6) vs (2) Gean Tijhoff takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
 That's ten minutes gone in the round. Gean is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Gean is trying to escape the mount.
Gean tries to control Tijhoff's body but Tijhoff pushes him off. Gean squirms to his side and now Tijhoff has his back! Score +3 for taking back: Tijhoff (9) vs (2) Gean Gean is in bad spot here.
Tijhoff is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Tijhoff trying to control. Tijhoff really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Gean. Gean tries to break free.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Tijhoff is riding his opponent, not letting Gean buck him off. Gean tries to escape the position.
Tijhoff just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Tijhoff is fighting to break Gean's control of his arms but Gean is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Gean wants to control but Tijhoff passes easily into half guard.
