Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jake Drake (ranked 452 p4p, 151 weight class) and John Joe Smith (ranked 43 p4p, 17 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 4 - 1, fighting out of New York, Jake Drake!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Joe Smith!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Yuuki Gou and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Drake tries to score a power double leg takedown but Smith sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Drake somewhat.
Smith throws a hook but Drake blocks it.
Drake moves out of range as Smith strikes.
Smith throws a series of punches but Drake moves out of range.
John Joe Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith scores with a shot to the body.
Smith stuffs the takedown attempt from Drake. Drake gets slowly back to his feet.
Drake keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Drake has gone for a leg lock! Smith slips out almost immediately though and dives into Drake's guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Drake has his foot on Smith's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Smith works his way back into a safe position though.

Drake shoots in looking for a takedown. Smith tries to sprawl out of it but Drake keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Drake dives in and grabs Smith's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes down on Drake's head and hops out.

Drake shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Smith defends it nicely.
Smith changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.

Smith drives through and clinches with Drake against the cage.
Smith tries to work over Drake's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Drake manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Drake swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Drake throws his legs up looking for a submission but Smith uses it to pass to side control.
Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Drake keeps working.

Smith is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Drake knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Drake shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Smith sprawls well. Smith wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Drake gets slowly back to his feet.

Drake dives in for a single leg takedown but Smith sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Smith.
Drake blocking some punches.
Smith throws a head punch that misses.

Smith manages to break the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A decent looking cross lands there for Smith.
Drake shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Smith defends it nicely.
Smith connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Drake's hands.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

John Joe Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

John Joe Smith is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Drake shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smith as he jumps to the side.
Drake shoots in and drives through. Smith sprawls well.
Smith lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Drake circles away quickly and effectively.
Drake throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smith's waist but Smith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Drake off to one side.

Drake attempts a counter takedown but Smith avoids it well and moves away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Drake.
Smith thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Drake if he has to take too many more of those.

Drake closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Smith quickly recovers to half guard.

Drake is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Smith is just riding it out for now. Drake eventually gives up the hold.
Smith wants to control but Drake is keeping busy.
Smith wants to improve his position but Drake is controlling well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
