PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sigma Oliveria (ranked 4168 p4p, 5517 weight class) and Bobby Firmino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bobby Firmino told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Sigma Oliveria! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bobby Firmino! The judges for this bout are Roosa J�rvil�inen, Arvi Lind and Johanna Lukiainen.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Firmino lands a nice looking body shot.
Oliveria moves into the clinch successfully.
Oliveria using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Firmino has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Oliveria drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Oliveria stalls. Oliveria has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Firmino is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Oliveria prevents a body shot from Firmino.
Oliveria breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Firmino tries to clinch there but Oliveria circles away.
Oliveria is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Oliveria decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Oliveria postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Firmino to stand up. Firmino throws a body punch but Oliveria moves out of range.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Oliveria misses with a takedown attempt - Firmino sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sigma Oliveria. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Firmino closes the distance and clinches. Oliveria tries to pull guard but Firmino holds him up against the cage and eventually Oliveria drops back down to his feet.
Oliveria tries to land knees in the clinch but Firmino avoids the damage to the body. A right hook to the body lands for Firmino.
Oliveria escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Oliveria closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Oliveria pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Firmino lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Oliveria backs up against the cage.
Oliveria looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Firmino throws a nice looking combination but Oliveria bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Good work by Oliveria as he checks the leg kick. Firmino falls off balance throwing a combination
and Oliveria counters with a nice double leg into half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Oliveria stalling. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Firmino can do anything to dispel that myth. Oliveria not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Firmino wants to control but Oliveria is keeping busy.
Firmino is trying to stand.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Firmino has hold of Oliveria's hands but Oliveria slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Firmino tries to kick Oliveria off in order to stand up. Oliveria Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control. Firmino can't do much from the bottom here. Firmino is looking to reverse the position. Oliveria controlling from side mount. Oliveria in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. Firmino struggling a bit here.
 That's four minutes gone in the round.
Oliveria decides to stand back up. Oliveria steps back and let's Firmino get back to his feet. Oliveria blocks a head kick by Firmino.
Oliveria tries to clinch but Firmino moves out of range. Firmino looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it. Oliveria throws a combination that misses and Firmino counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Firmino lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Oliveria shoots in for a double leg but Firmino sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Oliveria is looking to clinch. Firmino misses with a wild body shot. Firmino scores with a hook to the body. Oliveria takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Firmino misses with a two punch combination.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Bobby Firmino dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.
Firmino connects with a body shot. Firmino lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Firmino has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Oliveria is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Oliveria closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Firmino's guard.
Oliveria decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Firmino is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Oliveria rather than just go for the knockout. Firmino lands a jab to Oliveria's midsection.
Oliveria moves into the clinch. Firmino works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.

Oliveria pulls Firmino into guard.
Firmino must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Firmino trying to control the position from guard on top but Oliveria is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Oliveria looking for a sweep. Not yet Oliveria, not yet. Firmino really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Oliveria. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Oliveria is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Oliveria trying to control the pace. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Oliveria lands a nice short elbow. Oliveria controlling the action here. Firmino wants to get back to his feet.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Firmino tries to kick Oliveria off in order to stand up. Oliveria Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Firmino is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Oliveria creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Oliveria has hold of Firmino's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Firmino tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Oliveria cranks the arm and Firmino screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Firmino, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:51 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Sigma Oliveria!
