PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zavian Barkley (ranked 1047 p4p, 1547 weight class) and Dean Gaines (ranked 145 p4p, 209 weight class). Dean Gaines told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Zavian Barkley! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 15 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dean Gaines! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Trevor Gratis and William Peck.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Barkley just misses with a punch to the body.
Gaines ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Barkley uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Gaines.
Barkley throws a quick counter kick to the body but Gaines avoids it. Gaines looks to land a body kick but Barkley moved away. Barkley blocks a jab. Barkley swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Barkley moves into range and clinches up with Gaines. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gaines lands a hook that snaps the head of Barkley backwards. Barkley pushes off an throws an elbow but Gaines leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage. Barkley blocks an uppercut.
Barkley pulls guard. Gaines looking to pass the guard.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Gaines trying to stand up but can't free himself from Barkley's guard. Gaines seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Barkley definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Barkley controlling Gaines's posture. Gaines must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Gaines stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Barkley swivels though and keeps the full guard. Gaines postures up.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Gaines is stalling in the full guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Let's hope that Gaines has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
 The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Gaines scores with a nice head shot. Gaines swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Barkley is looking to counter with a body kick. Barkley throws a body kick, spinning off balance and Gaines counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Barkley misses with a body kick. Barkley throws a nice head kick!
 It looks like Dean Gaines has been cut. Barkley throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gaines. Gaines's jab looks to have found its range, popping Barkley under the eye. Gaines cracks Barkley with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Gaines has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Barkley finds it's way round the side to connect with Gaines's head. Barkley looks to land a right hand but Gaines moved out of range. Barkley pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way. Gaines appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Barkley misses with a body shot
and Gaines counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Barkley looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Gaines jabbing away but nothing is landing. Gaines moves into range and connects with a jab. Barkley gets clipped by a big right hand and goes down spinning to the canvas! Gaines gets the back mount and begins to drop bombs on his rocked foe! Barkley is too out of it to defend against the strikes and the referee jumps in to save him from the beatdown!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Dean Gaines! An out of breath Dean Gaines thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
