PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Gunner Mason (ranked 24133 p4p, 5800 weight class) and Klaus Silverstein (ranked 272 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gunner Mason!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Klaus Silverstein!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Konstantin Menshow and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silverstein throws a combination that misses
and Mason counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Mason fails to land with a series of punches.
Mason lands a nice hook to Silverstein's body. Silverstein takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

and Mason counters with a straight right hand.
Mason misses with a wild body shot.
A combination from Mason does no damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mason lands a nice shot to the body.
Klaus Silverstein seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Silverstein tries to clinch up but Mason circles away and keeps his distance.
Silverstein moves in looking to clinch but Mason pushes him off.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Mason swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Silverstein on the wrong end of a nice jab.

Mason moves into the clinch.

Mason has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Silverstein uses from the top position.

Silverstein stands up and waves to Mason to follow him.
Mason seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Silverstein takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Mason fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Silverstein manages to avoid it.

and Silverstein counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Silverstein won't allow Mason to get back to his feet.
Silverstein is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Mason wants to get back to his feet but Silverstein is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Mason trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Silverstein working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mason tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Silverstein manages to move to mount!
Mason is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

Mason throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Despite the aggression on Silverstein's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Gunner Mason is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Mason moves into range and clinches up with Silverstein.
Silverstein fails to pull guard.
Silverstein's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Silverstein is trying to pull guard but Mason turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Silverstein tries for a takedown but Mason manages to get underhooks.
Gunner Mason has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Klaus Silverstein.

Mason lands with a short shot to the head.
Mason digs a right hand underneath Silverstein's ribcage. Silverstein let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Silverstein has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Mason after a bit of a struggle.
Mason misses with a hook to the ribs.

Mason pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Silverstein misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Mason is looking to counter with a shot to the body.

Mason avoids the body shot from Silverstein.
Mason fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Silverstein manages to avoid it.

Mason bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Silverstein's head.
Silverstein moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Silverstein uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Mason.

and Mason counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

and Mason makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

and Mason cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Mason is looking to wear down Silverstein with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Mason connects with a nice looking jab.

Mason lands with a hook. Silverstein tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Silverstein tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mason paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Mason swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Silverstein.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Klaus Silverstein has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Gunner Mason is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Silverstein takes a head kick and shrugs it off.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gunner Mason showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mason, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
