PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kody Ruiz (ranked 3896 p4p, 4900 weight class) and Rene Latope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Latope has chosen Star Dancer as his entrance music. On his way into the cage it seems that Kody Ruiz has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Kody Ruiz seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Kody Ruiz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rene Latope!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Santiago Holmes and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruiz fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Ruiz has his takedown stuffed
and Latope counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

It looks like Kody Ruiz has been cut.

Latope looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Latope stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Ruiz fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kody Ruiz. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ruiz shoots in looking for a takedown. Latope tries to sprawl out of it but Ruiz keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Latope manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Latope rushes Ruiz and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Ruiz is trying to pull guard but Latope turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Latope managing to block the knees to the body from Ruiz.
Latope has Ruiz pressed against the cage, preventing Ruiz from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Latope escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Kody Ruiz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
No joy there for Latope, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Ruiz seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Latope scores with a nice strike.
Latope lands a head kick. Ruiz smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Latope lands a nice leg kick that just misses Ruiz's sensitive parts.

and Latope counters with a left and a right that stings Ruiz.
Ruiz fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
It seemed like Latope was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Ruiz tries for a takedown but Latope circles away easily
and Latope counters with a lovely shot to the body.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Ruiz clinches up with Latope and pushes him back against the cage.

Latope is trying to push Ruiz away but Ruiz has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Latope has hold of one of Ruiz's legs. Ruiz is fighting the takedown attempt but Latope gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Ruiz is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Latope dives into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Ruiz strikes from the bottom but Latope takes advantage and advances to full mount!
Latope tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Latope can't control as he wanted to and Ruiz manages to get the fight back to his half guard.

Latope gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ruiz shoots in for a double leg but Latope sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Ruiz has been working on his balance at Cozad The Island, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Latope.

Ruiz closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Latope's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Ruiz turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Latope bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ruiz.
Latope throws a counter combo.
Ruiz falls off balance throwing a combination
and Latope counters with a two punch combo.
Ruiz misses with a lunging right hand

and Latope counters with a left and a right that hurts Ruiz! He wobbles and falls to the floor - he's in big trouble! Latope jumps into full mount!

Ruiz is rocked!
Latope wants to take his opponent's back but Ruiz doesn't allow it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Rene Latope dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Kody Ruiz's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.


Latope takes the fight into the clinch.
Ruiz lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Latope's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Latope has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Latope feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Ruizs jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Ruiz shoots for a double leg takedown but Latope sprawls well. He's pushed Ruiz's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Rene Latope seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Ruiz gets cracked there but stands up to it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ruiz lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

It looks like Rene Latope has been cut.
Ruiz dives in for a single leg takedown but Latope sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Ruiz comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

Latope wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Ruiz has him pressed against the cage.

Latope escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Ruiz lands a leg kick that knocks Latope off balance momentarily.

Ruiz throws a strike but Latope rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Latope's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

and Latope counters with a left and a right that stings Ruiz.
Latope moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Ruiz goes for a double leg but Latope avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Latope continues to drive forward.
Latope has been looking to improve his clinch game in recent weeks. Ruiz seems to have the measure of him in the clinch so far, so let's see if Latope can turn it around.
Latope has had enough of the clinch but Ruiz keeps him there for the moment.
Ruiz misses with a knee strike.

Ruiz lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Rene Latope has got the better of the ground game so far.

Latope pushes Ruiz off looking to stand but Ruiz dives back in and keeps control.
Ruiz is taking a breather. Latope says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ruiz looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Latope with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Latope wants to control but Ruiz is keeping busy.
Latope makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Latope.
Ruiz controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Ruiz working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Ruiz loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Rene Latope will probably get the nod - 10:9.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Kody Ruiz is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Latope tries to kick Ruiz off but Ruiz keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Latope has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Ruiz is working away from the top position though.
Latope looks like he's trying to stand up.

Latope is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Ruiz decides to stand up.
Latope throws a head kick that misses.

Ruiz has Latope up against the cage in a clinch.

Latope pulls Ruiz into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ruiz is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Latope avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Ruiz is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Ruiz has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Latope is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Ruiz chips away with some ground and pound.
Ruiz is stalling in the full guard.

Latope is working an open guard so Ruiz takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Ruiz takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

Ruiz moves into range and clinches up with Latope.
Latope gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Ruiz.
Latope is trying to break the clinch but Ruiz is controlling him.
Ruiz is looking for a takedown.

Latope is trying to trip Ruiz. He has hold of a leg but Ruiz is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Latope persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Ruiz wants to get back to his feet but Latope passes into half guard.

Kody Ruiz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rene Latope is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ruiz flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Kody Ruiz.
I think Latope has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
