PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tre Jokinen (ranked 2247 p4p, 1391 weight class) and Haakon Cabrera (ranked 159 p4p, 113 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tre Jokinen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Haakon Cabrera!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Gregory Folan and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloppy strikes from Jokinen. Those never looked like landing.
Jokinen connects with a right hand. Cabrera shakes it off.
Jokinen shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Cabrera counters with a nice uppercut.
Jokinen fails to land with a series of punches.
Cabrera throws out a counter right but Jokinen avoids it with no problem.
Jokinen fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Jokinen swings widly with a right hand
letting Cabrera counter with a right hand.

It looks like Tre Jokinen has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jokinen has managed to clinch.
Cabrera tries for a takedown but Jokinen manages to get underhooks.

Jokinen jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Cabrera lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Cabrera with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Jokinen to score with a decent uppercut.
We've been hearing reports that Jokinen has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Tre Jokinen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Jokinen lands the left hand.
Cabrera throws a head kick but Jokinen moves out of range.
Jokinen throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
A head kick misses from Cabrera.
Jokinen drops down looking for a counter takedown but Cabrera sprawls and moves away.
Jokinen misses with an uppercut.
Cabrera ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Cabrera lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Jokinen has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Jokinen and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

and Cabrera counters with a nice low kick that buckles Jokinen's knee momentarily.
Cabrera pivots, looking for a leg kick but Jokinen is out of range and Cabrera settles back down.
The fight stays on the outside here - Jokinen looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Cabrera misses with an uppercut. Jokinen saw that one coming.
A slapping leg kick lands for Cabrera.
Jokinen checks a low kick from Cabrera.

Jokinen has closed the distance and engaged Cabrera in a clinch.
Jokinen swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Jokinen prevents Cabrera from breaking the clinch.

Jokinen drags the fight down to the ground.
Jokinen not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Jokinen working for a triangle but Cabrera defends it easily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Cabrera looking to sit in guard and control but Jokinen gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Cabrera tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jokinen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cabrera swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Cabrera working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jokinen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jokinen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Cabrera looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Jokinen trying to control the position from guard on top but Cabrera is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cabrera wants to sweep but no luck.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cabrera is looking for a triangle but Jokinen pushes his legs off easily.
Jokinen wants to control from the top but Cabrera keeps moving.
Cabrera looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jokinen is one step ahead there.

Cabrera trying to keep a closed guard but Jokinen is proving a slippery customer.

Our spies down at at FF Forever inform us that Cabrera has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jokinen accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Cabrera is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Cabrera wants to hit a sweep here but Jokinen passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Cabrera there!

Cabrera is trying desperately to improve position.

Cabrera tries to improve his position but Jokinen has taken his back! Jokinen has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Cabrera tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Jokinen pushes Cabrera away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 6:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Tre Jokinen!
During a confident post fight interview, Tre Jokinen thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
