PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Preston Garza (ranked 4517 p4p, 4492 weight class) and Sonic Boom (ranked 384 p4p, 380 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Preston Garza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Sonic Boom!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Arvi Lind and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Garza gets caught flat footed, as Boom shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Garza looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Boom showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Boom won't allow Garza to get back to his feet.

Garza looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Garza controlling Boom's posture.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Boom thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Garza looking to hit a scissor sweep but Boom is one step ahead there.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Boom trying to control the position from guard on top but Garza is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A nice combination there by Boom.
Garza looks to land a body kick but Boom moved away.
Boom steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Garza.
Boom looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Garza shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Boom pinned against the cage. Boom gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Boom is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Boom throws a head kick that misses.

Garza throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Boom was covering up waiting for the punch and Garza finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Boom wants to sweep here but Garza controlling him for the moment.
Boom is pulling down on Garza's head. It's preventing any offense from Garza, at least for the moment.

Garza is looking to work some ground and pound but Boom has wrist control.
Boom wants to sweep here but Garza controlling him for the moment.

Boom is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Garza is aware though and is defending well.
Garza trying to control but Boom is working from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Garza clinches up with Boom and pushes him back against the cage.
Boom tries to score a body lock takedown but Garza shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Boom fails to pull the fight into his guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Boom as Garza tries to tie him up.
Garza can't get the takedown.
Boom is trying to maintain a safe position but Garza gets an underhook and turns Boom into the cage.
Boom is trying to pull guard but Garza has him pressed against the cage.
Preston Garza has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sonic Boom.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Boom.

Garza gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Garza looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
It looks like Garza is going to stand back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
The fighters are battling for position here. Boom manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Sonic Boom will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Horrible takedown attempt by Garza or perhaps it was just good defense by Boom, which made it look bad.
Good work by Garza as he checks the leg kick.

Boom clinches up with Garza and pushes him back against the cage.

Boom pulls guard.
Garza prevents Boom from getting back to his feet.
Boom is trying to control the position but Garza postures up.
Boom has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Boom is looking to stand up but Garza isn't so interested in that idea.
Garza controlling from the top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Boom working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Garza has passed into half guard!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Garza throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Garza is thwarting Boom's attempts to control the position.
Boom wants to get back to full guard.
Boom pushes Garza off looking to stand but Garza dives back in and keeps control.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Garza is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Garza not doing much here.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Garza shoots in but Boom avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Garza misses with a body kick.
Boom shoots for a double leg takedown but Garza sprawls well. He's pushed Boom's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Boom drives through and clinches with Garza against the cage.

Boom breaks from the clinch.
Garza moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Garza fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Preston Garza. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Garza fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Boom closes the distance and clinches.
Boom makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

Garza is trying to stall.

Garza gets control of Boom's arms and successfully pulls guard. Garza will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Boom trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Preston Garza overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Boom wants to pass the guard but Garza is keeping the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Garza shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Boom sprawls well. Boom wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Garza gets slowly back to his feet.

Boom closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Garza quickly recovers to half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Sonic Boom will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Garza shoots and misses
and Boom cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Boom clinches up against the cage.

Boom ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Boom no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Boom manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Garza manages to get himself to full guard.

Boom is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Garza is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Garza has escaped and now he's on top!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Boom is trying to control but can't.

Garza content to control rather than advance.

Boom is looking to improve his position.
Garza has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Boom tries to hold on but Garza pushes him away.

Garza tries to control but Boom wriggling away.
Garza is looking to stand but Boom has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.
Boom is working to get back to half guard.
Garza throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Garza thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Boom is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
Garza controlling from mount.

Boom is looking to get to half guard.
Boom avoids a series of strikes thrown by Garza.
Garza wants to control the pace but Boom is squirming around nicely.
Boom tries to hold on but Garza postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Garza thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Preston Garza has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Sonic Boom is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boom bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Preston Garza.
I think Boom has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking Sonic Boom rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
