PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alpa Chino (ranked 1722 p4p, 1319 weight class) and Cole Steel (ranked 233 p4p, 186 weight class). Cole Steel will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alpa Chino!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 1, fighting out of London, Cole Steel!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Russell Pearce and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chino scores with the left hand. Steel knows he should have avoided that one.
Chino uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Steel.

The fighters circling - Steel throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Steel lands a really nice looking cross but Chino seems unphased.
Steel scores with the left hand. Chino knows he should have avoided that one.
Steel's corner calls for a 1-2. Steel obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Chino tries to move into range but Steel moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Chino throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
We've been hearing reports that Chino has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Steel bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Chino's head.

It looks like Alpa Chino has been cut.
Steel tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Chino was well out of range. Poor timing from Steel.
Chino misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Steel is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Chino had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into mush.

Chino shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Steel manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Our spies down at at BKC Gym inform us that Steel has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?

Chino lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Steel looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Steel is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Steel had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Chino defends it easily.
Steel is trying to control the position but Chino postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Chino works over Steel with some ground and pound from guard.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Chino lands a nice short elbow.

Chino is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That was a close round but I would say that Alpa Chino will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Steel throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Chino sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Chino with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Steel to score with a decent uppercut.

Chino bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chino working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Steel is looking to control Chino's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Steel avoid being mounted?
Chino lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Steel is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Chino's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Chino's back!
Chino tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Chino takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Steel jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Chino manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Steel lands a few punches from side control.
Steel lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Chino sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Chino slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Steel wants to control from the top but Chino keeps moving.

Steel distracts Chino with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Chino manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Steel manages to get himself to full guard.

Steel has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Steel looking for a triangle here. Chino is fighting it but it looks tight! Steel pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Chino is tapping out - this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Cole Steel!
A very excited looking Cole Steel made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
