Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Maxton Hefferman (ranked 4409 p4p, 4325 weight class) and John Schmidt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Maxton Hefferman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John Schmidt!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Schmidt throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Hefferman was covering up waiting for the punch and Schmidt finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Schmidt scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Hefferman trying to keep a closed guard but Schmidt is proving a slippery customer.
Schmidt won't allow Hefferman to sweep him here.
Hefferman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Schmidt showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Schmidt loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Schmidt postures up in Hefferman's guard and throws a big left but Hefferman blocks it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hefferman can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Schmidt controls the pace.
Schmidt has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Schmidt thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Schmidt throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Hefferman works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Schmidt trying to control the position from guard on top but Hefferman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Schmidt is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Schmidt drops back looking for a leg! Hefferman is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hefferman manages to kick Schmidt off! Schmidt jumps back into Hefferman's guard.
Hefferman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Schmidt connects with a couple of short punches.
Schmidt with a flurry of punches that miss.
Hefferman looking to control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Schmidt pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hefferman is keeping the position for now.

Hefferman is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Schmidt defends well.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Schmidt trying to control but Hefferman is working from the bottom.
Schmidt passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.

Schmidt is trying to work for a kimura but Hefferman is defending well.
Schmidt takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Hefferman trying to control but Schmidt postures up.
Schmidt thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hefferman's head.

Hefferman looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Hefferman wants to get back to his feet.
Schmidt seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Schmidt is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hefferman doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Schmidt.

Hefferman has hold of Schmidt's hands but Schmidt slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Schmidt has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Hefferman defend it? Schmidt steps over the head and cranks it - Hefferman is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Schmidt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:28 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). John Schmidt!
