The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mazepin moves out of range as Nickels strikes.
Mazepin tries to counter with a takedown but Nickels is quick to defend against it.

Nickels feints and as Mazepin raises his hands in defense, Nickels changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Mazepin is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Nickels pulls his head out easily.
Mazepin wants to sweep but Nickels has passed to side control!

Mazepin is looking for a sweep. Nickels is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Nickels throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Mazepin.

Nickels escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mazepin gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Nickels manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Mazepin shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Mazepin showed some decent athleticism there.

Nickels got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mazepin has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Nickels has managed to get both his arms back between Mazepin's legs - danger averted.

Nickels has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Mazepin isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Nickels stacks Mazepin on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Nickels!

Mazepin is trying to maintain the position but Nickels is very close to passing his half guard.

Mazepin has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Nickels. Oh but Mazepin has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Nickels goes limp - he's gone! Mazepin jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!
