PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jela Bello (ranked 4446 p4p, 3027 weight class) and Jake Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 382 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jela Bello!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jake Paul!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Russell Pearce and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bello fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Paul changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Bello drives through and clinches with Paul against the cage.
Bello tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Paul tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Bello just stands there and leans against the cage.

Paul breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Bello shoots in looking for a takedown but Paul manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Bello's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jela Bello. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Paul moves into the clinch successfully.

Paul turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Bello throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
This has been an exciting period of action!

Bello fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Paul, pushing him back against the cage.
Paul has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Bello is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Paul trying to control the position from guard on top but Bello is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Paul loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Paul must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Paul is pushing down on Bello's leg trying to pass to half guard. Bello is fighting to maintain full guard but Paul has managed to sneak the leg through.
Bello is staying active underneath Paul, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Bello holds on and takes a little breather.

Bello is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Paul controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Bello is pulling down on Paul's head. It's preventing any offense from Paul, at least for the moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Paul pulls out of a head kick attempt.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Paul.
Paul tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Paul shoots in but Bello avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Paul goes for a double leg but Bello avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Bello continues to drive forward.

Bello dives in for a single leg takedown but Paul sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Paul tries to counter by closing the distance.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Bello takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Bello throws an elbow but it misses.

Paul is trying to push Bello away but Bello has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Bello is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Paul pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Bello keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Paul's efforts to push away.
Bello tries to score a body lock takedown but Paul shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Paul accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Paul manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Bello on his heels. He'll look to pass Bello's guard now, I'm sure.

Bello manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Bello throws a head kick but Paul moves out of range.
Bello rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Paul moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
A little jabbing left from Paul on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Paul takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Bello is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Paul gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Paul has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Bello uses from the top position.

Paul has his foot on Bello's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Bello works his way back into a safe position though.

Bello shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Paul as he avoids it easily.

Bello finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Paul tries to close the distance and clinch but Bello swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Bello seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.

Bello breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Paul pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Paul keeps the fight on the outside.
Good work by Paul as he checks the leg kick.
Bello throws a low kick, looking for Paul's leg but Paul calmly moves out of range.

Paul shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Bello as he jumps to the side.
Jela Bello is winning the standup battle so far.
Paul takes one to the chin there.

Paul has Bello up against the cage in a clinch.

Paul ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Paul no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Bello decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Paul, up you get!

Bello tries for a takedown but Paul sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Paul leaves Bello with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Paul shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Bello is trying to escape back to his feet but Paul uses the scramble to pass into side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Paul is putting a hurting on Bello here, landing some big shots from side control.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jake Paul will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Bello tries to clinch up but Paul circles away and keeps his distance.
Despite the aggression on Paul's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Bello shoots in for a takedown but Paul shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Bello tries to score a power double leg takedown but Paul sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Bello somewhat.

Paul throws a push kick but Bello slaps the foot to one side.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Paul tries to clinch there but Bello circles away.

Paul pushes Bello up against the cage in a clinch.

Bello manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Bello wriggles free and stands up.
A nice leg kick lands there from Paul.
Paul tries to close the distance and clinch up but Bello swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Paul jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Bello walks away with a smile on his face. Paul gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Bello fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Paul avoids it really well and circles away.

Paul shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bello but Bello pushes him off and we're back to square one.

and Bello takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Paul shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Bello manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Paul is fighting to break Bello's control of his arms but Bello is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jela Bello.
I think Bello has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
