PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Finlay Standifer (ranked 1924 p4p, 2146 weight class) and Katsu Yamasaki (ranked 256 p4p, 276 weight class). The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Finlay Standifer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Katsu Yamasaki!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Fedor Mirinova and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yamasaki uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Standifer.
Standifer getting the better of the striking in that exchange.

and Yamasaki counters with a single leg into guard. Standifer didn't expect that.
Standifer is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Standifer looking for subs off his back but Yamasaki has passed one foot through into half guard.

Standifer is looking for a sweep.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Standifer is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Yamasaki is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Yamasaki shoots in for a double leg but Standifer sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Standifer takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Yamasaki throws a lazy right hand but Standifer sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Standifer digs a good hook to Yamasaki's body.

Yamasaki swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Standifer.
Standifer misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Nice sprawl there from Standifer as Yamasaki shoots in.
A little feinted left hand from Standifer on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Katsu Yamasaki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Standifer looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Standifer gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Yamasaki is trying to pull guard but Standifer turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Finlay Standifer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Katsu Yamasaki.

Yamasaki is trying to pull guard but Standifer turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Standifer lands a left hand that snaps the head of Yamasaki backwards.

Yamasaki's coach down at Shinobi Martial Arts & Ninjutsu was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Yamasaki's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Yamasaki tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Standifer smiles and moves away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Finlay Standifer will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Yamasaki tries to clinch but Standifer is having none of it.

Standifer fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Yamasaki sprawls well initially but Standifer persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Standifer knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Yamasaki on the ground.
Well, if Standifer is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Standifer is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Standifer tries to free his leg and advance position but Yamasaki is retaining full guard.

Yamasaki is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Standifer is aware though and is defending well.

Standifer got a little sloppy there for a moment and Yamasaki has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Standifer has managed to get both his arms back between Yamasaki's legs - danger averted.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Standifer wants to pass the guard but Yamasaki is keeping the position.

The fighters circling - Yamasaki throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Standifer seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Yamasaki misses with a straight left.
Yamasaki misses with an uppercut. Standifer saw that one coming.
Standifer throws a body punch but Yamasaki moves out of range.
Standifer looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Yamasaki is working for a kimura but Standifer is defending it quite comfortably.
Yamasaki uses his free foot to push down on Standifer's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Standifer.

Yamasaki looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Standifer is in all sorts of trouble here.
Standifer wants to control but Yamasaki is having none of it.
Standifer wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

Standifer is just holding on here. Yamasaki manages to take his back.

Katsu Yamasaki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Standifer connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Yamasaki momentarily.

Standifer has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Standifer there as he acknowledges the shot.
Standifer bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Yamasaki takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Yamasaki shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Standifer can't keep his opponent in guard - Yamasaki advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Standifer is positioning himself well to prevent Yamasaki advancing to mount.

Standifer lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Standifer's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
