PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nigel Bear (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Umi Diablo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Umi Diablo told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nigel Bear! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Umi Diablo! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Matheus Silva and Mauricio Rocha.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diablo gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Bear stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Diablo swivels though and keeps the full guard. Bear trying to control the position from guard on top but Diablo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Diablo striking from the bottom here. Bear not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Diablo controls Bear momentarily but Bear frees himself. Bear slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Bear pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Diablo is keeping the position for now.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Diablo looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Diablo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Diablo wants to control the position but Bear says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Diablo moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Diablo wants to sweep but no luck.

 That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Diablo pushes Bear off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Bear tries a head kick but it misses.
Diablo stuns Bear with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Nice takedown defense from Bear. No joy for Diablo on that attempt. Diablo looks gassed! Bear fails with an attempt to clinch.
Bear shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Diablo's guard. Bear controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Bear loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
 That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bear gets to his feet. Diablo looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Bear shoots in and drives through. Diablo sprawls well. Bear with a lazy takedown attempt
and Diablo counters with a nice double leg into side control. Bear won't be happy with that. Diablo is looking to take a break and control but Bear is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Bear sneaks back into half guard. Bear on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Bear tries to get out of the position. Bear trying to control here.

 That's four minutes gone in the round. Bear is pressing down on Diablo's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Bear uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Bear scores a takedown into full mount! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage! Diablo is looking to get to half guard. Bear content just to control the position here. Bear avoids the attempt from Diablo to control. Bear looking to control but Diablo is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. And that�s the end of the round � the fighters go back to their corners.
Nigel Bear dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Diablo feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Bear wants to sweep but no luck. Diablo must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Diablo pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Bear is keeping the position for now. Bear working a defensive guard here.
Diablo wants to control from the top but Bear keeps moving. Diablo makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Bear looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Diablo passes into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Bear is trying to improve his position.
 That's one minute gone in the round.
Diablo stands up. A choreographed right hand from Bear misses the target. Bear tries to clinch and Diablo counters with a nice body kick.
A punch lands to the side of Bear 's head but he takes it in his stride. Diablo fails with an attempt to clinch.
Diablo moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Bear is rocked! A nice leg kick lands there from Diablo.

Bear manages to break the clinch.
Bear swings away with a body shot that misses
and Diablo counters with a shoot takedown. Bear fights it but they end up in guard.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Bear has his hands on Diablo's head, controlling the position.
Bear manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Diablo looks to land a left hand but Bear moved out of range nicely.
Bear shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Bear showed some decent athleticism there. Bear slows the pace down in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bear decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up. Bear is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Bear misses with a head kick.

and Diablo counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Bear's guard now. Diablo trying to control the position from guard on top but Bear is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Bear wants to stand but Diablo is controlling the position. Bear doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Bear looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Diablo is defending well. Bear quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Diablo has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Bear celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
