PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Kernan (ranked 4310 p4p, 4343 weight class) and Austin Yates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tommy Kernan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Austin Yates!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Saam Ante and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yates stuffs the takedown.
Kernan shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Yates counters with a body kick.

Kernan clinches up against the cage.

Kernan decides to pull guard.

Yates gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Yates shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Good work by Yates as he checks the leg kick.
No joy there for Kernan, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
As Kernan backs off Yates throws a huge counter combo but Kernan manages to avoid it all.
Kernan closes this distance looking for a takedown but Yates circles away.
Yates shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Kernan counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Yates shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kernan sprawls well. Kernan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Yates gets slowly back to his feet.
Tommy Kernan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Austin Yates.

Yates drives through with a takedown into guard.
Yates trying to control but Kernan is working from the bottom.

Yates slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Kernan manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Yates is looking for a sweep. Kernan is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Yates trying to hold on to Kernan's head to control him but Kernan postures up.

Kernan wants to work for an arm triangle but Yates is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kernan stops Yates from getting back to his feet.

Kernan is working for a kimura but Yates is defending it quite comfortably.

Kernan is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Yates has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kernan is working away from the top position though.
Kernan throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Yates actively working from the bottom here.
Kernan not doing much here.

Kernan decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Yates throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
Yates scores with a head kick. Kernan tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Kernan misses with a few strikes there.
As Kernan backs off Yates throws a huge counter combo but Kernan manages to avoid it all.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Tommy Kernan dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Kernan forces Yates back against the cage and clinches.

Yates escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Kernan throws a body kick that misses.
Kernan shoots in but no luck this time.
Yates feints the counter takedown.
Tommy Kernan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Kernan wants to clinch up but Yates keeps it at a distance.
Kernan dives in and grabs Yates's left leg, looking for a takedown. Yates pushes down on Kernan's head and hops out.

Yates closes the distance and clinches.
Yates is looking to take this one to the mat.

Kernan drags the fight down to the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Yates with a flurry of punches that miss.
Yates has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kernan is proving hard to escape from.

Kernan will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Yates controls from within his opponent's guard.
Yates stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kernan swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Yates wants to control from the top but Kernan keeps moving.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Kernan has closed the distance and engaged Yates in a clinch.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kernan taking a break, stalling in the clinch.

Kernan pulls guard successfully.
Yates wants to stand but Kernan is controlling his posture from full guard.
Kernan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Kernan manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Kernan throws a head kick that misses.
Yates tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Kernan counters with a series of strikes. Yates will be more careful next time no doubt.

Yates fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kernan avoids it really well and circles away.
Kernan appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Kernan gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Yates fails to pull guard.

Kernan jumps into guard, dragging Yates to the mat.

The fight stays on the outside here - Kernan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Kernan shoots in and drives through. Yates sprawls well.

Yates decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Kernan pushes Yates off and gets back to his feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Yates closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Yates wants to control but Kernan is keeping him busy.

Yates remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Kernan is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Yates passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.
Kernan is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Yates can do to turn this around?

Kernan is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Yates pulls his head out easily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Yates wants to take a breather but Kernan is having none of it.

Kernan kicks off Yates and gets to his feet.

Yates tries to land a front kick but Kernan steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Kernan shoots in but no luck this time.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Kernan has taken the fight to the clinch.
Kernan tries to break free but Yates pushes him back against the cage.

Yates breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Horrible takedown attempt by Kernan or perhaps it was just good defense by Yates, which made it look bad.

Yates closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nice strikes from Yates there.
Yates really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kernan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Kernan makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Yates misses with a low kick.
Kernan takes one to the chin there.
Kernan looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tommy Kernan. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kernan shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Yates defends it nicely.
As Kernan backs off Yates throws a huge counter combo but Kernan manages to avoid it all.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Tommy Kernan.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kernan, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
