PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Yuuji Hoshino (ranked 2028 p4p, 1585 weight class) and Robby Fowel (ranked 121 p4p, 95 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Yuuji Hoshino!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Robby Fowel!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Peter Branson and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A low kick lands for Hoshino.
A thudding body kick lands there by Hoshino!
Hoshino misses with a leg kick

and Fowel counters by clinching up.
Fowel tries to score a body lock takedown but Hoshino shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Fowel is trying to pull guard but Hoshino has him pressed against the cage.

Fowel jumps guard and drags Hoshino to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hoshino postures up.
Hoshino is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Fowel is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Fowel looking for a guillotine here but Hoshino defends easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hoshino stays in close to Fowel's body and controls the position.
Hoshino would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Fowel has his foot on Hoshino's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hoshino works his way back into a safe position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fowel lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Fowel pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hoshino is keeping the position for now.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Fowel drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Fowel jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Fowel wants to pass the guard but Hoshino is keeping the position.

Fowel drops back looking for a leg! Hoshino is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hoshino manages to kick Fowel off! Fowel jumps back into Hoshino's guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Hoshino holds on and takes a little breather.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fowel stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hoshino swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Fowel drops back looking for a leg! Hoshino is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hoshino manages to kick Fowel off! Fowel jumps back into Hoshino's guard.
Fowel trying to control the position from guard on top but Hoshino is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hoshino not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Robby Fowel dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.


Fowel gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Fowel has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hoshino has had enough of the clinch but Fowel keeps him there for the moment.
Fowel has a couple of punches blocked by Hoshino.
Hoshino has Fowel pressed against the cage.
Fowel slowing the pace effectively.
Stalling in the clinch from Fowel.
Hoshino definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Fowel doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Fowel jumps guard but Hoshino stands there with Fowel around his waist. Fowel gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Fowel pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hoshino with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Fowel tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Hoshino throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.

Fowel shoots in looking for a takedown. Hoshino tries to sprawl out of it but Fowel keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hoshino manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Hoshino thinks about countering with a body kick.
Yuuji Hoshino seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hoshino lands with a right hand.
Hoshino scores with a push kick.
Fowel takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Yuuji Hoshino is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Fowel shoots in for a takedown but Hoshino shows good takedown defense.
Yuuji Hoshino has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Robby Fowel.
Fowel moves out of range of the body kick from Hoshino.
Fowel with the counter takedown but Hoshino avoids it easily.
Hoshino lands a jab.

Hoshino works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Fowel shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hoshino as he jumps to the side.
Yuuji Hoshino is winning the standup battle so far.
Fowel has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Hoshino.
Hoshino with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Fowel takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Fowel takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Hoshino scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hoshino lands a front kick.
Hoshino looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Fowel wants to counter with a clinch but Hoshino pushes him away.
Fowel has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Hoshino finds it's way round the side to connect with Fowel's head.

Fowel is rocked!
Hoshino throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Fowel tries for a takedown but Hoshino sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Hoshino lands with a thumping leg kick.
The crowd cheers as Hoshino lands an impressive looking overhand right. Fowel doesn't seem phased though.
Hoshino throws a leg kick which misses Fowel's front leg but catches the back leg as Fowel tries to avoid it.

Fowel shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hoshino's guard.

Hoshino has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Fowel off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Fowel takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hoshino misses with a few strikes there.
Fowel tries to counter with a clinch but Hoshino shakes him off and moves away.
Hoshino ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
A jab lands there for Hoshino.
Fowel takes one to the side of the head.
Fowel fails with the takedown
and Hoshino counters with a nice uppercut.
Fowel is still on wobbly legs! Can Hoshino finish him?
Fowel tries for a takedown but Hoshino circles away easily
and Hoshino counters with a stiff right hand.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Yuuji Hoshino dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Fowel tries for a takedown but Hoshino circles away easily
and Hoshino counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Fowel seems to have recovered his senses.
Hoshino misses with an attempted mid kick.
Fowel has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Hoshino.
Fowel takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Hoshino throws a lazy body kick

and Fowel counters with a takedown into side control.

Fowel is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hoshino knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Fowel controls the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
You can see the frustration on Hoshino's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Fowel is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Hoshino looks calm but he's in trouble here. Fowel gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Hoshino is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Fowel lets go of the hold and Hoshino can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:26 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Robby Fowel!
