PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Felix Vick (ranked 4725 p4p, 5853 weight class) and Jorge Rom (ranked 561 p4p, 0 weight class). Rom has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Jorge Rom!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vick goes for a double leg but Rom avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Rom continues to drive forward.

Vick working for a triangle but Rom defends it easily.
Vick will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vick is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Vick controls Rom momentarily but Rom frees himself.

Vick wants to sweep here but Rom controlling him for the moment.

Vick is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Rom can do anything to dispel that myth.
Still in half guard, Vick seems content to control.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Vick can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rom is looking to escape.

Vick stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Vick fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Rom to the ground. Vick is now in Rom's guard.
Vick is standing up over Rom. Rom looks to escape but Vick dives into side control.

Vick looking to control but instead Rom has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

Vick winds up and cracks Rom with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Vick wants to free his trapped foot but Rom is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Vick is looking to take a break and control but Rom is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Rom is defending against the submission attempts here by Vick.

Rom has one foot on Vick's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Vick throws out a loose jab but Rom uses good head movement to avoid it.
Rom changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Vick looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Rom is fending him off so far but Vick persists. Nope, Rom circles away and we're back to standing.
A countering left hand to the body from Rom misses.
Rom stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rom wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Felix Vick. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rom misses with a low kick as Vick jumps back.
Vick will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Rom shoots in but Vick avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Rom is breathing heavily.

Nice sprawl there from Rom as Vick shoots in.
Rom lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Vick displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Rom.
Vick is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rom can do to turn this around?

Vick darts in and clinches Rom up against the cage.
Rom jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Vick walks away with a smile on his face. Rom gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Vick fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Rom sprawls well initially but Vick persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Vick seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rom does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Vick is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Rom is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Rom has hold of Vick's hands but Vick slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Vick wants to control but Rom is keeping him busy.

Vick is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Rom doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Vick.

Vick frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Vick lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Rom hang on?
Vick with shots to the head and body - Rom looks very uncomfortable down there.

Vick is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Vick throws a leg kick but Rom checks it.
Vick shoots for a double leg takedown but Rom sprawls well. He's pushed Vick's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Vick closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Rom pushes Vick off but Vick dives into side control.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Vick is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Vick decides to stand back up.
Vick looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Rom is fending him off so far but Vick persists. Nope, Rom circles away and we're back to standing.

Vick has closed the distance and engaged Rom in a clinch.

Vick has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Rom doesn't defend quickly enough and Vick has managed to lock this one up! Can Rom escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Vick on a fantastic submission victory.
