PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sonic Boom (ranked 5221 p4p, 5262 weight class) and Gerry Brooks (ranked 498 p4p, 501 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Sonic Boom!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gerry Brooks!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Wesley Smith and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Boom closes the distance and clinches.
Brooks avoiding damage as Boom throws knees to the body.

Brooks manages to pull guard.
Boom throwing strikes but missing.
Brooks is adopting a defensive guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boom wants to stand and escape but instead Brooks has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.


Brooks stands and steps away. Boom gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brooks throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Boom doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Brooks counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Boom is working Brooks over against the cage.
Boom trying to control the position but instead, Brooks has worked for underhooks and has pushed Boom into the cage.
Boom jumps guard but Brooks turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Boom with a knee to the head.
Boom is working for takedown but Brooks is calmly controlling the position for now.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sonic Boom. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Brooks tries to break the clinch but Boom is controlling the position.

Brooks successfully pulls guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Brooks can do anything to dispel that myth.
Brooks is pulling down on Boom's head. It's preventing any offense from Boom, at least for the moment.
Boom wants to stand but Brooks is controlling his posture from full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Boom trying to control the position from guard on top but Brooks is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Brooks has control of Boom's left arm, preventing Boom from doing any damage.
Brooks looking for a sweep. Not yet Brooks, not yet.
Boom wants to stand but Brooks has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Boom stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brooks swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Boom scoring with punches to the head and body.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brooks preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Brooks seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Brooks is looking for a triangle but Boom pushes his legs off easily.
Boom trying to control the position from guard on top but Brooks is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Brooks has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Boom off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Boom shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Brooks as he jumps to the side.
Boom fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Brooks clinches up against the cage.
Boom is trying to maintain a safe position but Brooks gets an underhook and turns Boom into the cage.

Brooks gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Boom scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Brooks manages to mount him!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Brooks controlling the pace for now.
Brooks lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Boom is in all sorts of trouble here.
Brooks sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Gerry Brooks dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Boom will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Boom blocks a head kick by Brooks.
Boom shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Brooks as he jumps to the side.
And Brooks tries to counter it with a takedown but Boom pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Brooks feints and as Boom raises his hands in defense, Brooks changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Brooks slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Boom wants to sweep here but Brooks controlling him for the moment.
Brooks has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Brooks controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Boom is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Brooks is stalling in the full guard.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Boom blocks a leg kick.
Boom throws a big counter combination but Brooks scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Boom dodges the punch combination from Brooks.
Boom tries to clinch up but Brooks circles away and keeps his distance.
Boom shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Brooks as he avoids it easily.

and Brooks counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Brooks is nestled in close to Boom, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Brooks content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Brooks is looking for a kimura but Boom is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Brooks to get the leverage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brooks tries to pass to full mount but Boom defends it.
Boom is looking to improve his position.
Brooks sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Boom keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Let's hope that Brooks has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Boom trying to control here.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Brooks seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Brooks looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Brooks is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Boom is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Brooks pulls his head out easily.

Brooks is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Boom defends it well.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Brooks passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Boom!

Brooks takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Boom tries to lock up and control but Brooks gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
The referee warns Boom that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
BOOM! Brooks connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Brooks looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Brooks working the ground and pound effectively.
Brooks scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Brooks controlling his opponent.
Boom tries to reverse the position but Brooks maintains control.

Brooks working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Brooks raining down shots from the mount!
Boom is working to get back to half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Brooks has hold of Boom's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Boom manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gerry Brooks comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Brooks winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After the fight, Gerry Brooks was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
