PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Bill Skelly (ranked 4665 p4p, 2904 weight class) and Rigoberto Guzman (ranked 513 p4p, 355 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Bill Skelly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rigoberto Guzman!
The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Peter Branson and Michael Johnstone.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Guzman wants to clinch up but Skelly keeps it at a distance.
Skelly slips under a jab.

Guzman darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Skelly moves into full guard.
Skelly looking to hit a scissor sweep but Guzman is one step ahead there.
Skelly bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Guzman's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Skelly stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Guzman swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Guzman trying to keep a closed guard but Skelly is proving a slippery customer.
Skelly trying to control but Guzman is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Guzman tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Guzman working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Skelly doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Skelly manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Skelly wants to pass the guard but Guzman is keeping the position.
Guzman controls Skelly momentarily but Skelly frees himself.
Skelly stands and throws Guzman's legs to the side, diving into side control.
You can see the frustration on Guzman's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Skelly is chipping away with strikes.
Skelly is staying tight to Guzman's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Guzman is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Guzman wants to get back to his feet but Skelly drags him back down.
Guzman is looking to regain half guard here but Skelly keeps moving and retains side control.
Guzman gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Skelly is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Guzman defends it well.
Guzman is not content to let Skelly control the position.

Skelly is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Skelly wants to take Guzman's back but he can't do it this time.

Skelly looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Skelly lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Skelly wants to take Guzman's back here but Guzman is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Skelly is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Guzman can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Skelly can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Guzman is looking to escape.

Skelly is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Guzman to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Guzman shrugs it off.

Skelly wants to take his opponent's back but he's not managed it.

Skelly is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Guzman can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Guzman sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Guzman wants to get back to full guard.
Skelly is trying to control. Guzman wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Skelly is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Guzman tries to sprawl but Skelly drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Guzman kicks Skelly off and gets back to his feet.
Skelly throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Guzman circles away from the clinch attempt.
Guzman slips a straight right by Skelly.

Guzman closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Skelly is looking to improve his position.
Skelly gets back to full guard.

Guzman stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Guzman shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Skelly's guard.

Skelly keeping moving, preventing Guzman from controlling successfully.
Skelly manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Guzman manages to get himself to full guard.

Skelly wants to pass the guard but Guzman is keeping the position.
Skelly won't allow Guzman to get back to his feet.
Guzman is breathing heavily.
Skelly stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Guzman swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Skelly slips nicely into half guard.
Skelly not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Skelly wants to free his trapped foot but Guzman is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Skelly is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Guzman has managed to free his arm - good work.
Skelly lands with a punch from half guard.
Skelly wants to pass the guard but Guzman is defending well.

Skelly is working for a kimura but Guzman is defending it quite comfortably.
Skelly prevents Guzman from standing back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Skelly passes to side control.
You can see the frustration on Guzman's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Skelly creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Skelly wants to control but Guzman is keeping him busy.
Skelly tries to advance to mount but Guzman denies him.

Skelly has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Guzman!
Guzman is wriggling around trying to escape.

Skelly has control of Guzman's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Guzman regains control of the situation pretty easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Guzman leaves Skelly with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Guzman tries a head kick but it misses.
Skelly misses with an uppercut.
Guzman takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Bill Skelly seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fight stays on the outside here - Guzman looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Guzman swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Skelly shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Guzman manages to escape and get back to his feet!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Skelly moves into the clinch.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Guzman is looking to break free of the clinch but Skelly has double underhooks.
Guzman is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Skelly misses with a hook from the clinch.

Guzman ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Guzman no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Skelly slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Skelly sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Guzman's guard.
Guzman won't allow Skelly to pass to mount.

Skelly is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Guzman wants to get back to full guard.
Guzman takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Skelly works his way into full mount!

Guzman wants to control but Skelly is having none of it.
Skelly lands a heavy elbow.
Skelly scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Guzman?
Skelly tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Skelly wants to take Guzman's back but he can't do it this time.

Skelly working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Guzman turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Skelly off and cradles Guzman's limp body as Skelly celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Bill Skelly!
