PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rodney Alcala (ranked 1255 p4p, 967 weight class) and Rock Silva (ranked 29 p4p, 21 weight class). Alcala comes to the cage accompanied by Leonard Cohen - Everybody Knows. Rodney Alcala has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 4 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Rodney Alcala!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rock Silva!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Donald Grub and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silva with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Alcala to score with a decent uppercut.

Silva cracks Alcala with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Alcala looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Silva finish him?
Alcala checks a low kick from Silva.
Silva's coach down at EFC Gym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Silva's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Alcala bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Silva's head backwards.
Silva lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Alcala misses with an uppercut.
Alcala lunges at Silva with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Silva's hand.
Alcala throws a right and a left that Silva avoids nicely.

Silva looks to land a left hand but Alcala moved out of range nicely.
Alcala throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Silva throws out a counter right but Alcala avoids it with no problem.
Alcala lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Alcala misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Alcala's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Alcala duly obliges.
Silva takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Alcala throws a head kick but Silva moves out of range.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
No joy there for Silva, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Alcala has taken the fight to the clinch.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Alcala looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Alcala has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Silva avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Alcala lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Silva backwards.
Alcala tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Silva just stands there and leans against the cage.

Alcala jumps guard and drags Silva to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Alcala has his foot on Silva's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Silva works his way back into a safe position though.

Alcala has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Silva can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That was a close round but I would say that Rodney Alcala will probably get the nod.

Rodney Alcala seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Silva throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
As Silva looks to move away, Alcala throws a big counter combo but Silva just gets out of the way.

Silva cracks Alcala with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Silva has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Alcala to stand back up!
Oh Alcala is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Alcala really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Silva fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Alcala has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Alcala is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Silva pulls his head out easily.
Silva perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Alcala wants to sweep but Silva has passed to side control!
Rock Silva has got the better of the ground game so far.
Alcala is pushing Silva's head away, looking to escape. Silva manages to hold on to the position though.
Alcala tries to bench press Silva off him but Silva keeps the position.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Silva has control of an arm but Alcala manages to advance to Silva's back!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Alcala sinks in the hooks and is looking for the choke. He's got it! Silva taps out!
