The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McPenicillan has closed the distance and engaged Perriera in a clinch.
Perriera has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by McPenicillan after a bit of a struggle.
McPenicillan lands a nice elbow from the clinch.

It looks like Alex Perriera has been cut.

Perriera drops to a knee looking for a takedown but McPenicillan gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Perriera pulls guard effortlessly.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Perriera is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Perriera seems keen to control McPenicillan's posture.

McPenicillan wants to get up but he can't break Perriera's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
