PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Madness Fighter (ranked 3313 p4p, 3211 weight class) and Coronnie James Dio (ranked 449 p4p, 433 weight class). James Dio has chosen Coronnie James Dio - Rainbow In The Dark as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The key to victory for Madness Fighter has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Madness Fighter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Coronnie James Dio!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Tiny Johnson and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fighter doesn't manage to clinch there - James Dio circles away.

Fighter has closed the distance and engaged James Dio in a clinch.
Fighter misses with a hook from the clinch.
James Dio tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Fighter's elbow.
James Dio tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Fighter smiles and moves away.
James Dio tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Fighter was well out of range. Poor timing from James Dio.
Fighter moves out of range as James Dio strikes.

James Dio moves into range and clinches up with Fighter.
James Dio misses with some punches.

James Dio gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
James Dio perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
James Dio is trying to control the action in half guard but Fighter is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
James Dio wants to pass the guard but Fighter is defending well.
James Dio moves into full mount! Fighter won't be happy about that!
Fighter has given up his back. Will we see James Dio going for some submissions?

A lull in the action here.

James Dio looking to break Fighter's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Fighter remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise James Dio will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
James Dio tries to get the hooks in deep but Fighter pushed the leg off.

My spies in CHURCH OF ZOIDBERG TRAINING GROUNDS inform me that James Dio has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

James Dio has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Fighter has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

Fighter defends a prolonged rear naked choke attempt and turns nicely into his opponent's guard.

James Dio not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Fighter got a little sloppy there for a moment and James Dio has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Fighter has managed to get both his arms back between James Dio's legs - danger averted.
James Dio is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now James Dio is on top in guard.

Fighter is looking to stand up but James Dio isn't so interested in that idea.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
James Dio looking to sit in guard and control but Fighter gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Fighter stands up and waves to James Dio to follow him.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Fighter takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Fighter tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
James Dio scores with a nice right hand.
Coronnie James Dio seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fighter lands a jab to James Dio's midsection.
James Dio fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Fighter avoids it really well and circles away.
Fighter is looking to counter the offense by James Dio and move into the clinch.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Coronnie James Dio dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

James Dio has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
James Dio's jab looks to have found its range, popping Fighter under the eye.

Fighter gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
James Dio advances to half guard.

Fighter is trying to escape back to his feet but James Dio uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Coronnie James Dio has got the better of the ground game so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

James Dio goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Fighter rolls with the submission and now he's on top in James Dio's guard! Nice work there by Fighter!
Fighter wants to get up but he can't break James Dio's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

James Dio wants to sweep here but Fighter controlling him for the moment.
Fighter would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Fighter wants to get up but he can't break James Dio's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

James Dio escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Fighter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Fighter struggles to land a body shot inside as James Dio controls his hands.
Fighter misses with a hook to the ribs.
Fighter fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Fighter lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of James Dio backwards.
Fighter lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt James Dio or not.
James Dio doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
I was talking to Fighter's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Fighter tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Fighter lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
James Dio is trying to pull guard but Fighter turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Fighter.

Fighter prevents a takedown attempt there.
Madness Fighter has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Coronnie James Dio.

Fighter throws a punch but it's blocked by James Dio.
James Dio tries to work over Fighter's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

That was a close second round but I would say that Madness Fighter will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

James Dio gets in close and instigates a clinch.
A short right from Fighter.
James Dio misses with some punches.
James Dio drops down looking for an ankle pick but Fighter pulls his leg out and moves away.
James Dio swats away the attempt to clinch by Fighter.
Fighter scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
James Dio ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Fighter moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Fighter counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Fighter uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before James Dio has time to react.
Nice takedown defense from Fighter. No joy for James Dio on that attempt.
Fighter scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.

Good exchange - Fighter coming out on top.
Fighter dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on James Dio. That did some damage!
Madness Fighter is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
James Dio feints a jab promting Fighter to slip. James Dio then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Fighter slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

James Dio closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Fighter is not content to let James Dio control the position.
James Dio passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Fighter!
James Dio wants to take Fighter's back here but Fighter is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

James Dio is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Fighter is surviving well by controlling James Dio's body position as best he can.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
James Dio trying to control but Fighter is having none of it.
James Dio is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Fighter is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
James Dio takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

James Dio swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Fighter is now in James Dio's guard. A big mistake from James Dio there, giving up the dominant position!
Fighter has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of James Dio is proving hard to escape from.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Madness Fighter.
I think Fighter has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
