PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roman Tobak (ranked 4411 p4p, 4141 weight class) and Pupunha Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Roman Tobak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Pupunha Gracie!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Colin Fray and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Tobak counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Tobak missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Gracie has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Tobak tries to free his leg and advance position but Gracie is retaining full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Tobak jumps guard and drags Gracie to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Gracie trying to control but Tobak is working from the bottom.
Gracie won't allow Tobak to sweep him here.
Gracie looking to sit in guard and control but Tobak gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Gracie pulls Tobak in close to his closed guard and prevents Tobak from doing any damage or advancing position.

Tobak drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Tobak jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Tobak stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gracie swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gracie looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Let's hope that Gracie has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Tobak throws a big right hand that misses.
Tobak is fighting to break Gracie's control of his arms but Gracie is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Tobak throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gracie's waist but Gracie gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Tobak off to one side.

and Gracie counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Gracie doesn't manage to clinch there - Tobak circles away.

Tobak closes the distance and clinches.

Tobak breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Tobak gets underhooks to prevent Gracie's takedown attempt.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

and Gracie counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Gracie changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Tobak fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Tobak is trying to pull guard but Gracie has him pressed against the cage.

Tobak seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Tobak wants a takedown.
Gracie has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Tobak is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Tobak misses with a hook to the ribs.
Tobak jumps guard but Gracie turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Tobak throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Tobak is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Gracie can do to turn this around?

Tobak goes for a takedown attempt but Gracie pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Tobak is trying to break the clinch but Gracie is controlling him.
Tobak misses with an elbow strike.
Tobak is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Gracie is defending well.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

and Gracie counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Gracie will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Gracie.

A close second round but Pupunha Gracie will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Tobak tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Gracie stops Tobak from passing to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gracie is working to avoid the ground and pound but Tobak connects with a decent elbow.
Tobak cracks Gracie with a big right hand but Gracie just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Tobak tries to move into full mount but can't pass Gracie's legs.

Tobak remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
You can see the frustration on Gracie's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Gracie gets back to half guard.
Gracie wants to control but Tobak is keeping busy.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
