PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Marcus Matthison (ranked 4164 p4p, 24529 weight class) and Michael Scott (ranked 358 p4p, 532 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Marcus Matthison!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Scott!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Aleksandr Martynov and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Scott looks for a takedown but Matthison sprawls well.
Scott shoots in for a double leg but Matthison sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Matthison seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Matthison really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Scott misses with a takedown

and Matthison counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Matthison.
Marcus Matthison has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michael Scott.

Matthison jumps guard and drags Scott to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Scott is looking to work some ground and pound but Matthison has wrist control.

Scott got a little sloppy there for a moment and Matthison has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Scott has managed to get both his arms back between Matthison's legs - danger averted.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Scott must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Scott really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Matthison. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Matthison is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Scott defends well.

Scott is fighting to break Matthison's control of his arms but Matthison is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Matthison scores with a one two! Scott had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Scott throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Matthison tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Scott is in Matthison's guard.

Matthison wants to stand and escape but Scott is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.


Matthison looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Scott holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

Matthison is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Scott has managed to free his arm - good work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Scott slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Scott keeping moving, preventing Matthison from controlling successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Scott wants to sweep here but Matthison controlling him for the moment.

Matthison thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Matthison postures up and lands a big shot to Scott's brow.

Matthison drops back, looking for a kneebar! Scott looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Scott looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Scott!

We've been informed that Scott has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

Matthison is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Scott cracks Matthison with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Scott is landing with some decent strikes but Matthison is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Scott prevents Matthison from getting the reversal.
Matthison tries to hold on but Scott postures up.
Matthison regains half guard.

Matthison is trying to get back to full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Scott stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Matthison to get to his feet.
Scott fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Matthison avoids it really well and circles away.
Scott shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Matthison as he avoids it easily.

Scott manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Matthison on his heels. He'll look to pass Matthison's guard now, I'm sure.

Matthison wriggles free and stands up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Matthison gets the takedown into side control.
Scott tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Matthison is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Scott can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Matthison is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Scott is surviving well by controlling Matthison's body position as best he can.
Scott is squirming around, avoiding Matthison's attempts to control the action.
Scott tries to get back to half guard but can't.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Marcus Matthison will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

A nice leg kick lands there from Matthison.
Scott shoots for a double leg takedown but Matthison sprawls well. He's pushed Scott's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Matthison closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Scott's guard.

Matthison gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Scott gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Matthison to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Matthison forces his way into half guard.

Scott is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Matthison has latched onto it... Big trouble! Matthison pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Scott is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Matthison!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Marcus Matthison!
Michael Scott was interviewed post fight and said 'It was Dwight's fault for my lose he's so annoying'.
