PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Darrion McKee (ranked 2255 p4p, 2871 weight class) and Matt Hughes (ranked 250 p4p, 310 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Darrion McKee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Matt Hughes!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Ivan Kurochkin and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McKee shoots in for a takedown but Hughes shows good takedown defense.
Hughes looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
McKee avoids the body shot from Hughes.
McKee closes the distance and clinches up with Hughes, looking for a takedown. McKee pushes Hughes against the cage but Hughes circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
No luck with that takedown attempt from McKee.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darrion McKee. That's going to take a lot out of him.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Hughes pushes McKee up against the cage in a clinch.
Hughes misses with a body punch.
McKee blocks an uppercut.
Hughes dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Hughes with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
McKee goes for a takedown in the clinch but Hughes prevents it.
Hughes wants a takedown but no success here.
Hughes misses with a shot to the kidneys.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

McKee on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

McKee jumps guard.
Hughes not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

McKee pulls Hughes in close to his closed guard and prevents Hughes from doing any damage or advancing position.
Hughes postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
McKee is trying to control the position but Hughes postures up.
We've been hearing good reports from McKee's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
McKee pulls Hughes in close to his closed guard and prevents Hughes from doing any damage or advancing position.
Hughes works over McKee with some ground and pound from guard.
Hughes landing with the ground and pound.
Hughes throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Hughes trying to control the position from guard on top but McKee is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A looping hook to the body misses from Hughes. McKee does a little dance to reset his feet.
Hughes keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Hughes dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Hughes leaves McKee with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
McKee shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Hughes sprawls well. Hughes wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. McKee gets slowly back to his feet.
Hughes with the counter takedown but McKee avoids it easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from McKee is defended easily by Hughes.

McKee looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McKee shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hughes pinned against the cage. Hughes gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
A little jabbing left from Hughes on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

McKee shoots in and gets a takedown into Hughes's guard.

Hughes is trying to control the position but McKee postures up.

McKee drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hughes manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now McKee has Hughes in his guard.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Hughes working his ground and pound in the gym.
Hughes trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McKee swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hughes throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McKee works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
McKee is adopting a defensive guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Hughes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

McKee looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McKee swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hughes wants to control from the top but McKee keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

McKee is looking for a triangle but Hughes pushes his legs off easily.
McKee preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Hughes in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Hughes trying to control the position from guard on top but McKee is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
McKee looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
McKee tries for a takedown but Hughes sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
McKee has a takedown stuffed.

McKee drives through with a takedown into Hughes's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Hughes had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. McKee defends it easily.
Hughes wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Darrion McKee overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That was a close second round but I would say that Darrion McKee will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Hughes tries to score a power double leg takedown but McKee sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Hughes somewhat.
McKee takes a shot to the body in his stride.
McKee fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
McKee misses with a takedown attempt - Hughes sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

McKee ducks under a wild hook from Hughes.
McKee shoots for a takedown but Hughes saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hughes changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Darrion McKee. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Hughes gets a double leg takedown into McKee's guard.
McKee is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

McKee is figuring out what he wants to do next.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hughes trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but McKee manages to pass to mount!
Hughes is in all sorts of trouble here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McKee controlling from the full mount.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hughes working to try and regain half guard.
McKee sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

McKee looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
McKee content just to control the position here.

McKee fails to advance to Hughes's back.
McKee forces the positional change into back control.

McKee working for a choke but Hughes is defending well.
McKee avoiding Hughes 's attempts to control his hands.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
McKee keeps control of the position easily here as Hughes tries to buck him off.
Hughes trying to control the action but McKee just sinks the hooks in.

McKee looking for the choke from the back.
Hughes is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

And that's the end of the fight!
Darrion McKee showed his dominance in that final round.
I think McKee has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
