PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Sohal (ranked 6865 p4p, 6186 weight class) and Sam Short (ranked 634 p4p, 601 weight class). Sam Short will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Sohal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sam Short!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Frank Dennis and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Short lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Sohal takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Short is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Sohal.
Sohal appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Short looks to land a combination. Sohal sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Short throws a leg kick

and Sohal decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Short's guard.
Short keeping moving, preventing Sohal from controlling successfully.
Sohal looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Sohal drops back, looking for a kneebar! Short looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Short looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Short!


That's one minute gone in the round.
Sohal is trying to improve his position.
Sohal keeping his opponent close.
Sohal gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Short not doing much here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sohal is trying to get back to full guard.
Sohal wants to control but Short passes into side.
Sohal tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
Short can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sohal is looking to escape.
Sohal tries to hold on but Short pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sohal is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Sohal is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sohal bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Short keeping full guard, as Sohal tries to pass.
We've been hearing that Sohal has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Short preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Short working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Sohal.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sohal trying to control but Short is working from the bottom.
Sohal looking to sit in guard and control but Short gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Short passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.
Sohal is refusing to be controlled, as Short sits in half guard.
Sohal is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sohal wants to control but Short is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Sam Short dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!

Short throws a leg kick that is checked

and Sohal counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Short!
Sohal tries to move to mount but Short blocks the move with his legs.
Sohal misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Sohal creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Short sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Sohal with the ground and pound but Short regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Sohal is keen to just control but Short is a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sohal perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Short is looking for a sweep. Sohal is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Sohal throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Short is staying active underneath Sohal, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Short slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Sohal postures up in Short's guard and throws a big left but Short blocks it.
Sohal trying to control but Short is working from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Short cracks Sohal with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Short lands a big right hand that sends Sohal crashing to the mat! Short stays standing though and waves Sohal back to his feet!

Sohal is rocked!
Short changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Oh Sohal is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Sohal tries to get into range but Short steps to the side and lands a beautiful hook that drops Sohal! He's faceplanted into the mat, ass in the air... he's out cold! That's an image he won't want to show his grandkids when he gets older! Short scores the big KO victory!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:26 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Sam Short!
A very excited looking Sam Short made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
