PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jim Beam (ranked 3509 p4p, 4177 weight class) and Kiryu Kazuma (ranked 433 p4p, 493 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jim Beam!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kiryu Kazuma!
The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Bruno Hogan and Summer Carpenter.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Kazuma fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Beam is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Kazuma to keep the fight standing.

Kazuma told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight.
Beam tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Kazuma's elbow.

Kazuma looks to land a combination. Beam sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

It looks like Jim Beam has been cut.
Beam lands with a hook. Kazuma tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Kazuma misses with the combination.
Kazuma takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Kazuma throws a right and a left that both miss.
Beam swats away the attempt to clinch by Kazuma.
It looked like Beam was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Beam scores with a hook to the body. Kazuma takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Beam ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kazuma moves away.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kazuma on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Beam lands a slapping body shot.

Kazuma cracks Beam with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Beam looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Kazuma finish him?

Oh Beam is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Kazuma tries to close the distance and clinch up but Beam swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Beam seems to have got his legs back now.
Kazuma blocks an elbow strike.
Beam throws a punch but it's blocked by Kazuma.

Beam tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Kazuma's elbow.

Kazuma is trying to break the clinch but Beam has him pressed against the cage.

Kazuma's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Beam is looking to wear down Kazuma with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Beam moves into the clinch.
Beam misses with a body punch.

Beam swings wildly with an uppercut but Kazuma uses good head movement to avoid it.

Kazuma has clasped his hands together around Beam's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Beam is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Beam throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Beam has his foot on Kazuma's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kazuma works his way back into a safe position though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kazuma pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Beam is keeping the position for now.
Kazuma must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Beam tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Kazuma stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Beam swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Beam can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Kazuma controls the pace.
Beam wants to sweep here but Kazuma controlling him for the moment.

Kazuma avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Beam working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kazuma doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Beam is tightening it up a little... Kazuma has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Kazuma reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Kazuma taps out! Nice BJJ there by Beam!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Jim Beam!
Jim Beam was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
