PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Luis Pinto (ranked 1820 p4p, 1876 weight class) and James Howlett (ranked 251 p4p, 261 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Luis Pinto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Howlett!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Reed Andrews and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Howlett rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Pinto connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Pinto lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Pinto.
Pinto waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Howlett.
Pinto shoots in and drives through. Howlett sprawls well.
Howlett throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Pinto.
Pinto is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Pinto looks to land a right hand but Howlett moved out of range.
Howlett avoids the body shot from Pinto.
Howlett keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Pinto lands a nice shot that snaps Howlett's head back.

Pinto takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Pinto looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Howlett controlling the position for now.

Howlett is looking for a sweep. Pinto is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Pinto is looking to advance position but Howlett won't allow it.

Pinto is working for a submission of some sort.
Howlett tries to get to full guard but Pinto has control of the leg.

Howlett is defending against the submission attempts here by Pinto.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Pinto is looking to advance position but Howlett won't allow it.
Pinto slows the pace down in half guard.

Pinto looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Pinto wants to pass the guard but Howlett is defending well.
Pinto is trying to control the action in half guard but Howlett is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Pinto is looking to advance position but Howlett won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Howlett is looking to improve his position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pinto lands with an uppercut that bounces Howlett off the cage and back into range.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Howlett shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Pinto throws an off balance right hand
and Howlett counters with a series of strikes. Pinto will be more careful next time no doubt.
Pinto bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Howlett's head.
Pinto scores with a nice head shot.
James Howlett is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Howlett pivots, looking for a leg kick but Pinto is out of range and Howlett settles back down.
Howlett blocks a jab.
Howlett stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Howlett wants it to stay on the feet.
Howlett throws a series of punches but Pinto avoids them all with ease.
Pinto looks to land a right hand but Howlett moved out of range.
Howlett slips under a jab.
Pinto scores with a jab to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Luis Pinto dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Pinto lands a lovely overhand right.
Pinto works Howlett's body with a nice hook.
Pinto blocks a low kick nicely.
Howlett throws a wild body kick that Pinto sees coming a mile off.
Pinto is looking to counter punch.
Howlett's coach down at The Forge was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Howlett's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Howlett lands a body shot.

Pinto drops Howlett with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Howlett looks back up at him and smiles so Pinto waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.

Howlett is rocked!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Howlett tries to clinch up but Pinto circles away and keeps his distance.
It looked like Pinto wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Howlett is still on wobbly legs! Can Pinto finish him?
Today's fight clock is brought to you by... OOOH that's a huge shot by Pinto! Howlett is in big trouble here - the ref steps in to save him and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:34 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Luis Pinto!
After winning the bout, Luis Pinto thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
