PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Shinya Aoki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and George Whissell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aoki comes to the cage accompanied by Carl Douglas - Kung fu fighting. Whissell has chosen Rose Of Sharon as his entrance music. George Whissell acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Shinya Aoki!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, George Whissell!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Whissell moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Aoki shoots for a takedown but Whissell saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Aoki misses with a takedown attempt - Whissell sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Whissell connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Aoki fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shinya Aoki. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Whissell getting the better of the striking in that exchange.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Aoki.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Whissell manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Whissell is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Aoki pulls his head out easily.
Whissell pushes Aoki off looking to stand but Aoki dives back in and keeps control.
Whissell throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Whissell manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Aoki feints and as Whissell raises his hands in defense, Aoki changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Whissell bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Aoki's guard.

Aoki had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Whissell is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Aoki Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Whissell's back instead.
Aoki is breathing heavily.
Whissell rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Whissell has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Aoki is working away from the top position though.

Aoki is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Aoki looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Whissell won't allow Aoki to pass to mount.

Aoki is trying to work for a kimura but Whissell is defending well.
Whissell wants to get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Aoki shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Whissell as he jumps to the side.
Whissell bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Aoki's head backwards.
Aoki tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Whissell swivels and escapes.
Whissell cracks Aoki with a right hand to the side of the head.
Whissell keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Whissell misses with a leg kick.
Shinya Aoki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Whissell scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!


Aoki is rocked!

Whissell has taken the fight to the clinch.
Oh Aoki is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Whissell breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Aoki seems to have got his legs back now.
Whissell works Aoki's body with a nice hook.
Whissell connects with a superb combination that knocks Aoki out cold! The referee charges across the mat and tackles Whissell before he can land any more shots to the unconscious Aoki!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). George Whissell!
