Undercard bout

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Luciano Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andre Galvao (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cruz kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Smack That. Luciano Cruz had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 186.3lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cruz pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Galvao back to the cage. Cruz follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Galvao fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Cruz sprawls well initially but Galvao persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Galvao maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Cruz could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Galvao has cracked it and Cruz is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Galvao!

I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Ambroos Joost was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Big Thump!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Ping Lin!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Wagner Zegers and Radbod Blank.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lin closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Thump to the mat! Thump manages to get full guard.
Lin stopping the sweep attempt from Thump.
Lin wants to pass the guard but Thump is keeping the position.
Lin is still trying to improve position.
Lin won't allow Thump to sweep him here.
Lin trying to control the position from guard on top but Thump is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Lin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Thump keeping moving, preventing Lin from controlling successfully.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Lin throws a sloppy body shot
and Thump counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Big Thump seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thump cracks Lin with a right hand to the side of the head.
Thump misses with a lunging right hand
and Lin counters with a nice body kick.
Thump is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Lin.
Lin follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land.
Thump fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Lin is out of range.
A telegraphed right hand from Lin misses the target.
Thump goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Lin getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Thump throws a wild body kick that Lin sees coming a mile off.
Lin misses with a head kick.
Thump was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Thump.
Thump looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

and Thump counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Lin thinking.
Thump feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Lin's calf.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Thump is pulling down on Lin's head. It's preventing any offense from Lin, at least for the moment.
Lin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Lin slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Thump tries to buck Lin off but Lin is having none of it.

Lin tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lin has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Lin swings around for an armbar but Thump sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Lin's guard.
Lin tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Thump wants to control from the top but Lin keeps moving.

Lin is looking for a triangle but Thump pushes his legs off easily.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Lin has control of Thump's left arm, preventing Thump from doing any damage.
Thump won't allow Lin to sweep him here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Thump stays in close to Lin's body and controls the position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ping Lin will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Lin drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Lin is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Thump is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Thump is trying to improve his position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Lin goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Thump has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Lin but great work by Thump.

Thump wants to stand but Lin is controlling his arm.
Lin tries to bench press Thump off him but Thump keeps the position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Lin tries to improve position but can't.
Lin keeps trying to improve his position.

An inside leg kick from Thump misses.
Thump uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Lin has time to react.
Thump takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
Lin takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Lin throws a lazy head kick
and Thump makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Thump lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Lin closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Thump quickly recovers to half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

That kick from Thump tenderised Lin's leg. Lin is trying to keep his angry face on.
Thump attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

Lin manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Thump on his heels. He'll look to pass Thump's guard now, I'm sure.

Thump manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lin manages to get himself to full guard.

Lin controls Thump momentarily but Thump frees himself.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Lin is staying active underneath Thump, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Lin throws a low kick, looking for Thump's leg but Thump calmly moves out of range.

Lin avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Good standup being displayed there by Thump as he connects with a hook.
Thump looks to land a right hand but Lin moved out of range.
Thump checks a low kick from Lin.
Lin throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Lin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Thump takes a swing at Lin's ribcage but misses.

Lin feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Lin is looking to advance position but Thump has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Lin is in all sorts of trouble here.

Lin tries to reverse the position but Thump maintains control.
Thump trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Lin is wriggling around trying to escape.
Ping Lin is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Thump can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Lin is looking to escape.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lin keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Big Thump.
I think Lin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
