Tappin takes a jab right on the kisser.
Junior throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Tappin's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Junior dives in looking to finish as Tappin flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Junior's strikes! Junior is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Tappin's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Tappin was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.

Matsumato drives through with a takedown into guard.
Maya wants to sweep but no luck.
Matsumato throwing strikes but missing.
Matsumato trying to control but Maya is working from the bottom.
Matsumato trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Maya is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Matsumato trying to control the position from guard on top but Maya is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Matsumato stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maya swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Matsumato stands and throws Maya's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Maya tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Matsumato wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Matsumato wants to lay and pray for a moment but Maya keeps working.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Maya parries the strikes from Matsumato easily there. Matsumato is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Maya to escape.
Matsumato wants to take a breather but Maya manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Matsumato.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

That was a close round but Macho Martel did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it.
