TTFC"s Mekel Vs Rangarajan

Event Preview: TTFC Merkel Vs Rangarajan
Team Thomas Fight Club
2011-12-03, New York, Hard Knocks - New York
Author:Mike Thomas

David vs Goliath is so clichéd, Goliath vs Goliath is the future and TTFC is a head of the game as always. Super heavyweight super fights for all! Saturday night, fight night!

Middleweight: Chris "The Cobra" Wideman (0-0) vs Gray "The Bully" Maynard (0-0)

It's a debutant showdown to kick things off with JiuJitsu ace Wideman testing himself against wrestling monster Maynard. Neither of these boys have an ace up their sleeve, rather they have it stuck to their forehead, one wants to roll, one wants to wrestle, neither can strike. The story coming out of these boys camps is that both think a 1-2 combo is a Cheeseburger Meal with milkshake. Eating a few of which may not be the worst thing for seriously undersized Gray Maynard who should be in there with 155lbers.

Prediction: Debut's don't get much easier than this for The Cobra. He has a huge size advantage, is facing someone with as laughable a stand up game as his own and his opponent only wants things on the mat where he will be out of his depth. Wideman by submission in round 1.

Middleweight: Rock Action (2-8) vs Jean Claude Van Varenberg (1-4)

Rock Action has everything but wins. His jack of all trades style has seen him come up short mores time than he deserves thanks to being matched with specialists. Decent stand up, combined with good wrestling and BJJ mean that he is a tough test for any debutant or fellow hard luck story. In Van Varenburg it's like looking in the mirror. Sporting an identical record to that of Action at the same stage of his career Van Varenburg can use Action as inspiration. Shape up or become another MMA 'also ran'. Rock Action has a bigger tool box but Van Varenburg has the Muay Thai to tilt the ice in his favour.

Prediction: Hard fought and close run but this one is Van Varenbergs by decision.

Light Heavyweight: Parfait "Le Saoulan" Hilton (2-3) vs Rice "The Player" Gayce (1-3)

A must win fight for both men, this one sees an interesting clash of styles that will dictate where their careers go. A win for Hilton and he is back to .500 and can use this as a platform to grow and improve, a loss makes him prospect fodder for at least a couple more fights. A win for Gayce confirms that he may be in the right sport afterall, a loss is perhaps career ending. Powerful Muay Thai specialist Hilton has the raw makings of a good Mixed Martial Artist where as Gayce is an out and out jiujitsu practioner. If this one hits the mat then Gayce is in control. The only problem is that with non-existent wrestling, worse stand up and a paper mache chin the chances of it going there are slim.

Prediction: Have a win Mr Hilton. Too skilled and too smart Hilton puts shin to dome and turns out the lights late in round 1.

Middleweight: David "Dr" Cox (0-0) vs Gerd "Mr Stenner" Stenner (1-2)

Take note brawl fans, this one is going to be sprawl and brawl 101. Two white belts, alike in their penchant for punching. One with abysmal wrestling one with mediocre wrestling, both with reason to be confident. The debuting Dr posseses enough wrestling to escape if the rock'em sock'em routine gets too much for him, stealing rounds and picking up points with virtually no fear of Stenners submissions. For Stenner he can be quietly confident, knowing that this one is going to be punch heavy and that he holds an edge in that department. Tactics and technique are dirty words for this likely Fight of the Night contender that seems certain to spill all over the cage.

Prediction: With a good gameplan this is can be as tough or as easy as David Cox wants. But as a debutant we don't how intelligent he is in the cage. Let's assume he knows what he is doing, Cox by decision or late TKO. Otherwise Stenner turns the lights out at the same point.

Light Heavyweight: "The Stoner" Jay Jay Medway (5-8) vs Gerard Loyack (2-3)

Gerard Loyack looks to pick up where he left off against Parfait Hilton by picking up his second TTFC win in as many attempts against organisation new comer Jay Jay Medway. "The Stoner" is vicious and experienced having split the KO's on his CV between wins and losses. Whilst neither has any ground game to speak of Loyack should look to use his superior wrestling to keep himself out of the firing line. Extended bouts of trading leather with Medway are not advised. If he can make this a dirty fight, grind it out and push the pace then Loyack can make this a long a difficult night for the Scouser.

Prediction: A smart Loyack takes the decision but his own lack of a BJJ prowess may put him off. If it does then Medway wins by TKO in round number 3.

Welterweight: "The Horror" Hector Hernandez (12-13) vs Douglas Santana (11-7-1)

In one of the most intriguing Welterweight scraps to come along for a while these two highly skilled fighters throwdown for your entertainment. Both of these fighters are a decent chin away from being world beaters. Boasting great stand up and respectable grappling skills it is their inability to remain conscious that tells the story of their careers with a staggering 75% of their combined losses coming by way of T(KO)! This is a dream for fight fans though as both love to stand and bang despite their obvious frailties making this a fight of reverse jack in the boxes. Wind the handles and wait, someone is going down and in violent fashion.

Prediction: This is one of those 'don't blink' fights that can end in a heart beat. Having taken less damage to date in his career and with excellent boxing I think Santana wins it by KO in round 2.

Heavyweight: Taai Taai (10-5) vs "The Destroyer" Kearney McGarrity (3-1)

Excellent prospect Kearney McGarrity arrives in TTFC looking to make a name for himself with his impressive skill set. Being well rounded is all well and good but most fighters fall short when put against a specialist. Not McGarrity who is excellent everywhere. He is better than most boxers, can hang with top submission boys and has the wrestling to match anyone in TTFC's heavyweight talent pool. Plain sailing for "The Destroyer" then? Not exactly. Taai Taai is a proven commodity in TTFC. Tried and tested as a powerhouse worthy of the title "The Destroyer" himself. Devastating knees and heavy hands compliment his strong wrestling game which have earned him back to back TKO wins.

Prediction: This is Godzilla vs King Kong with a knock out all but guaranteed. The longer this goes on the more it favours McGarrity but Taai Taai knows his job and does it well. There has been a spate of upsets for top prospects recently and another may well be on the cards here. Taai Taai gets it done much to the shock of most people with an early TKO win.

Super Heavyweight: Chris Cook (12-3) vs "The Hated" Dominick Luv Boivers (17-8)

Big men with big ambitions collide in a battle of collossal proportions. 'The Hated' sums it up pretty accurately when he says "I don't fight pretty but I hit hard". That will come as music to the ears of Chris Cook who adheres to the same mentality. His often underrated ground game can more than likely stay at home for this one as these two look to build on their impressive TTFC debuts. Both scored devastating knockouts around the minute mark and both have designs on the belt that Merkel and Rangarajan will duke it out for in the main event. Heavy hitting as they are, neither is a hammer swinger. Both possess the skill and technique to time shots and set things up.

Prediction: This one is a kickboxing match for as long as it lasts. Cook has strong kicks in his arsenal to compliment his boxing. Throw in the takedown defense to not have to worry about letting them fly and this one is Cook's to lose. One punch can end this fight at anytime but Cook is the more skilled fighter and the most likely to come home with the first round KO win.

Super Heavyweight: Cain "The Freight Train" Colbert (17-6) vs "The Eye" Robert Baratheon (11-4)

'The Freight Train' was derailed last time out and that has only made him madder. Hungrier and more dangerous than ever, he wants 'his' belt back. The first obstacle in his path back to the top is the ice cold Robert Baratheon. Calm, calculating and down right dangerous. Last time out Baratheon made ADCC Champion Brock Samson look nothing short of ordinary with his steam rolling ground and pound. The hapless Samson was the victim of some of the most devastating ground and pound you are ever likely to see and it served as a statement of intent from Baratheon. Focused and on form he is going to hurt anyone and everyone that steps in there with him. Whether that bothers Colbert remains to be seen as he is still the most dominant super heavyweight in the history of TTFC. Make no mistake, this fight will have an enormous bearing on the landscape at 265+ lbs.

Prediction: 'The Freight Train' is a TTFC legend but if the Baratheon that turns up for this fight is the same as the one that turned up last time out then Colbert has big problems on his hands. Baratheon by ground and pound TKO.

Super heavyweight: Armin Merkel (19-2) vs Ragdish Rangarajan (9-3)

With two pivotal 265+ lbs bouts preceding this fascinating main event title scrap, this is the icing on a super sized cake. Armin Merkel is undeniably a top 10 Super Heavyweight but Rangarajan is THE form big boy in TTFC right now. Not one, not two, but three consecutive first round TKO's form his contenders run to the main event to face the fearsome Merkel. Merkel is a monster, who wants to knock Richard Texeira off his perch as TTFC Poster Boy. Easier said than done but Merkel has the tools to give Lil Terror a run for his money. Brutal and technical in equal measure Merkel has the potential to keep that belt for a long time despite the wealth of legitimate challengers. But in the super heavyweight divsion more so than any other, one punch can change everything. Rangarajan has only ever tasted victory by T(KO) and Merkel is certainly not aversed to letting his fists do the talking either having knocked out 16 of 19 losing foes. Ragdish has never been the distance and that could be the deciding factor here. Merkel won't lose a step as this one drags on where as Rangarajan wants it over early.

Prediction: Don't be fooled by the 9-3 record of Rangarajan, he is a legitimate contender but Merkel will pull out the win. By decision or late stoppage he just has too much for the fighting pride of Jaipur.
