The Ben Stone Story

Fighter profile of Ben Stone by Chris Karter

The Ben Stone Story
El Stoner - El Bandito

Ben Stone grew up in boring Fort Myers, Florida. Despite being gifted athletically he was too much of a stoner to take sports seriously. Mary Jane seemed to his one and only love. Fighting was the only thing he was ever good at but after killing a man with a punch in a bar fight he fled to Rio de Janeiro, and when he arrived he took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a hobby to find a less violent solution to fights. He frequently participated in BJJ tournaments and quickly earned the respect of his mentors and locals for his ability in competition and ability to party with the best of em. When he was strapped for cash he'd resort to fighting in underground bareknuckle fighting circuits - the competition wasn't professional, but he got into some bloody brawls with some bad m'fuckers in places and neighborhoods that would make normal white men shit their pants. Rio gets bat shit crazy but down there he fought and fucked his way to being the greatest gringo Brazil has ever seen. After 5 years on the run the DA determined that the act was in the grounds of self defense - since Stone was a minor at the time of the crime, the victim was considerably larger and instigating the altercation - so the case was dismissed. Chris Karter got in contact with Ben Stone and convinced him to move back to the U.S. to train at Convicted Fight Club and become a pro fighter, breaking the hearts of many senoritas, but leaving as a legendary gringo.

Due to the criminal nature of his past charges it was difficult for him to get his license approved to fight in New York, so he showed up with a South American tan, beard, shades, and debuted under the alias Redmond Barry. His first opponent was veteran and former Solo FC lightweight champion Guillermo Gomez. 7-6 at the time, despite having a brown belt around his waist, 6 of his 7 wins came via TKO. Within the opening seconds Stone managed to get the fight to the ground and put Gomez on his back and gained side control. He stood up, landed a combo, took the fight to the mat again, and went to work...

Stone is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gomez is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Gomez is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Stone has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Stone has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Gomez is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Stone yanks on the arm and Gomez is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Ben Stone.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:05 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Ben Stone!
In Ben Stone's second fight, he faced Brazil's 2-0 BJJ prodigy and ADCC Champion Vitor Gracie. Ben didn't stand a chance on the ground, but he never let it get that far. From the start of the bell he was on him like white on rice.

Stone lands with a massive overhand right! Stick a fork in Gracie - he's out cold! Ermm... I think I just mixed my metaphors but yeah... That was a nice KO! Big win for Stone!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Ben Stone!
He went on to win his 3rd fight against Frito Lei via KO (Head Kick) 40 seconds into round 1. Soon after he signed with California Fighting Championships to fight veteran Craig David at Middleweight. He received KOTN @ CFC: Fight Night 2 after his performance:

Whack! Stone lands a heavy head kick that drops David. The ref tackles Stone to stop the fight - a great save by the referee because David was done.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Head Kick). Ben Stone!

California Fighting Championships never got off the ground and closed down shortly after. After a couple months on the market, Ben Stone signed with an organization known as The Steel Penn Fighting Temple of LA and agreed to debut at MW against Mark Keefer (11-8). He dominated from start to finish, winning a well deserved 30-27 unanimous decision. Stone decided to drop down to 170 permanently after that fight, and won his next two fights via TKO (strikes) against heavy handed Russian Experiment II (25-20) and Jake Shields (8-3).

Stone throws a perfectly timed hook that sends Experiment II crashing down! Experiment II tries to stagger back to his feet but Stone just hammers him until the ref stops the fight! A confused Experiment II asks the ref what just happened. Poor fella.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ben Stone!
Ben Stone really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Conviction logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.

Stone walks forward and throws a big overhand right! Shields drops to the floor like a sack of potatoes! Stone swarms on him with more punches until the referee wrestles him away from Shields's unconscious body! Wow, that was brutal!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ben Stone!

He improved to 7-0 and earned his first title shot against the champion with a granite chin Kennedy Embers (13-3-1). Embers was a good wrestler, but Stone wanted to prove he was better - and in the first round he proved it by cutting him open, taking him down, pinning him there, and trying to work strikes and submissions but Embers fended off his attempts and made it to Round 2. Round 2 wouldn't go any better for Embers, who got knocked around and beaten to a bloody pulp.

Quote

Stone drops Embers with a beautiful combination! Embers stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Stone is looking for the KO! Embers is rocked! Kennedy Embers's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Kennedy Embers's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Ben Stone!

Despite winning the title in a low tier org, it was still an accomplishment for the young up and coming fighter, and he was very pleased with himself. Now it was time to defend the belt. His next opponent was 29 year old Kobe "Black Mamba" Bryan (24-16-1) A brown belt with a chin of steel - in his 41 fights he had never been KO'd. Ben dominated the 1st round and he took the fight back to the ground in the 2nd Round with a perfectly executed hip toss. After being butterfly swept he pulled off a slick submission from his back to seal the victory.

Quote

Stone is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Bryan rolls with it to try and escape but Stone cranks on the arm and Bryan is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Ben Stone!

Jumping up and down and very excited, Ben Stone waved his t-shirt featuring Conviction's logo in front of the cameras.
That was SPFT's final event and he would leave the org with the belt around his waist. At 9-0 it was time for a step up in competition and the inflated contract offers started pouring in. He signed a 4 fight deal with one of - if not - the best organization in the history of Tokyo, and currently one of the top orgs in the world, ONI.

His first opponent would be Japanese vet and ONI journeyman Hideo Toyoku (19-12). Toyoku had already fought in ONI 23 times, he was a well respected Japanese fighter who showed up to fight and entertain the fans - and had never been stopped to strikes in over 30+ fights. There were a few things Ben Stone would have to adjust to before his fight: Flying to Tokyo and most importantly the grueling 10 minute rounds.

The Fight between Ben Stone and Hideo Toyoku was a war. Both men putting everything they got behind their punches, with Stone being the more conservative of the two fighters. Stone opened up a cut early in the 1st Round over Toyoku's eye, but clearly had his hands full as Toyuko continued to push the pace and give it his all - and even rocked Ben Stone in the 2nd Round - but Ben recovered his legs quickly and countered with some shots of his own despite losing the 2nd Round. In the 3rd Round, Stone clinched up and kept working on the cut over his opponents eye until it was bleeding so horribly that the doctor had to call the fight.

As Ben Stone got his breath back, he grabbed the microphone and managed to blurt out the following: It is a pleasure to be fightin in the best organization in Japan.. I been in Tokyo for three hours, somebody please point me in the direction of some marijuana.'.
He moved to 10-0 after a tough first fight that left him in a world of hurt and desiring the essence of sweet mary jane, it also sent Ben Stone a message and served as a much needed reality check: He was gonna need to bring his A game to every fight if he wanted to survive the competition in ONI. This wasn't the minor leagues, and his opponents were coming in to take his head off. On his way back to LA from Tokyo, enjoying his much needed recovery, his manager approached him with a fight offer that blew him away.

Jan David 25-9
12 (T)KOs - 2 Subs - 11 Decisions
Current ONI Welterweight Champion

"What the hell?! Already? You gotta be kiddin' me..."

The fight offer caught both him and his manager by complete surprise. The ONI title was obviously on his mind when he signed with the org, but nobody anticipated the opportunity to come knocking so soon. Out of the ice tub and back into the cage he went. Coming off an ass kicking against a tough Japanese S.O.B. he knew he had to bring it if he wanted to defeat the Texas native. Jan David was by far and par none the toughest fight of his career. Jan David was a former Synchronicity (4-0) and GAMMA (13-8) contender who fought for the GAMMA championship on 4 different occasions, was an elite boxer who held an impressive TKO victory over MMA legend Einar Lee, and is no slouch on the ground either with 2 submission victories under his brown belt. It was no secret that Ben Stone was a heavy underdog going into this one. He had a chip on his shoulder from his last fight, felt he had something to prove to the fans, the ONI organization, and his fight team. His manager made sure he knew that this was a once in a life time opportunity and that if he loses, he might never get a shot at the title again.

Well Stone has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ben Stone would flee from no man ever again. He came, he fought, and he captured the ONI Welterweight title. In a fight where MMA fans witnessed all aspects of MMA occur, Stone would be awarded a unanimous decision victory after out striking, out clinching, and controlling his opponent on the ground.

The 1st Round was close, the two fighters went back and forth but Stone managed to open up a cut on David.

The 2nd round was even closer and treated the fans to a battle on the ground - both fighters working aggressively for submissions - but neither successful in their attempts.

The 3rd Round is when Ben Stone began to dictate the fight - cutting Jan David up more and more - sending him back to his corner with a face dripping blood.

It wouldn't stop David from fighting though, and the two continued on for the next 2 Rounds, for a grand total of 50 minutes.

Ben Stone was on top of his stoner world. He had reached the pinnacle moment of his life. Defeating what could of been considered Goliath if it weren't named David so early in his career. After taking a few weeks to relax and bask in his glory, the next fight offer was on the table. Previously known as "The Tsunami" Ecif Irhcaz - Vietnam phenom, Inigo Montoya (15-5). Montoya was a tough opponent who had a deadly Muay Thai game and was equally dangerous on the ground. Coincidently, on the day of the fight, Ben Stone celebrated his 25th birthday.

After taking a jab to the head Stone engaged the clinch and immediately a back and forth Muay Thai fight ensued - Stone landed two elbows that split Inigo's ugly mug wide open and caused him to bleed all over the place, then scored a takedown, defended Montoya's attempt at a kimura, continued to chip away on the ground with strikes, advanced his position to mount, kept raining down the ground and pound which forced the referee to step in and protect Montoya from taking any further damage.

Quote

Stone uses his free foot to push down on Montoya's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Montoya.
Stone lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Montoya hang on?
Montoya tries to lock up and control but Stone gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Montoya tries to reverse the position but Stone maintains control.

Ben Stone took some time post fight to say the following; 'Yea dude, I killed your father.'.
Interviewer: "First off - happy birthday - and congratulations on an impressive performance tonight and defending your belt for the first time. How do you feel right now?"

Ben Stone: "Surreal - helluva birthday present. Now we can go out and celebrate."

Interviewer: "Walk us through the fight..."

Ben Stone: "Y'know man, I was way too focused on his reach advantage, wanted to neutralize it as much as possible. I intended on standin' and bangin' it out a lot more, but once he landed that jab I clinched up and maintained a good position. We went at it. I fired off some elbows that busted him up, took him down, gave him the business, and I got outta here unscathed with the W. Couldn't of went any better than that."

Interviewer: "Looks like you two were exchanging words at one point, care to tell us what was said?"

Quote

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Stone connects with a nice short shot to Montoya's temple.
Ben Stone: "I was singing the words from my entrance song, Small Axe; If you are a biiig treeee... we are a small axe... ready to cut you dooown (punch to the temple) cut you dooown..."

Interviewer: "So you're telling me you were signing a song?"

Ben Stone: "Great song. He's almost 6'5 and has a lot of reach on me. So that was the theme of the training camp. He's the big tree, I'm the small axe."

Interviewer: "That's got to be one of the strangest things I've ever heard, can you tell us why?"

Ben Stone: "Gotta keep the positivity flowin'. Channel all the anger and stress from training to kick his ass, direct it to positive energy, and use it to beat your opponent."

Interviewer: "So who will your next opponent be? What's on your agenda with only 1 fight left on your deal?"

Ben Stone: "As long as I have this championship around my waist I'll continue to defend my title. I'll fight whoever they put up against me. That's what I get paid to do. But tonight's agenda includes a flight home to LA, some weed, and hopefully this cute lil momma that we have for a flight attendant wants to join the mile high club or give me a rub n' tug."
