How do we keep topping ourselves? The bookers at DFC must keep asking themselves. Another night, another stacked card as Hugh Jaskok, one of the most outspoken fighters in the entire orginisation defends the belt against Henry Teller, and undefeated and very dangerous opponent, holding a sub of the night honour and finishing all his fights before the third round. Let’s run this card down!

Fight 1
Hugh Jaskok 3-0-0 vs Henry Teller 3-0-0: 5 Rounds of 5 Minutes for the DFC Lightweight Championship

If you have kept any kind of tabs on DFC –LV, then Hugh Jaskok needs no introduction…that said…here is one anyway. A fighter with a towering ego, but skills to back up his talk, the Lightweight champ is often heard proclaiming he will rip his opponents arm off. While I haven’t seen it happen in person, I’m not going to doubt him – are you?

After an incredible run of three first round submissions, he looks to make title defence number one against Henry Teller. Teller fights predominantly in a Muay Thai kickboxing style, with viscious strikes in the clinch, if Jaskok gets lured in, he’s going straight down.

This is a classic showdown of opposing disciplines, both with their own strengths and weaknesses. I think however, that Jaskok has a phenomenal ground game, that fighters have all succumbed to very quickly. While there could be some doubting against the quality of his opponents, you can see killer instinct when it shows and Jaskok has it. I predict he makes defence number 1 and hashtags #rippedhisarmoff

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Hugh Jaskok Round 1 (SUB)
Fight 2
Tobias “Piledriver” Lazlo 1-0-0 vs Samwell Lance 5-1-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 185lbs

I have a confession to make, don’t crucify me heavyweight purists or bantamweight believers, but the middleweight division will always be my favourite one. The fighters are proportioned to the point where you think “yeah those guys could kick anyone’s ass” without also thinking “yeah those guys are probably on steroids”.

This is why I highly anticipate this fight, as (1-0) “Piledriver” Lazlo, takes on Samwell Lance (5-1). Despite my prior statement of admiration for middleweights, this fight is going to be fairly one-sided in my mind. Lazlo is a great amateur wrestler with an undefeated collegiate background – a sign that you are a monster athlete. Unfortunately, in a sport where experience can win fights at key moments, he comes up against someone with more miles on the clock and more to give right now in Lance, a viscous kickboxer with 5 wins by knockout all coming in round 1 or 2. Lazlo could surprise us and smother Lance, striking him out in a flurry of blows on the ground, but I don’t think he has the ability to do that quite yet.

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Samwell Lance, Round 2 (TKO/KO)
Fight 3
Tommy “Crocodile” Hanes 3-0-0 v “Vicious” Vinny Vinicius 1-0-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 155lbs

I’d like to be the first to welcome both of these fighters to DFC! Good luck lads and when you are watching the main event, remember the reason why both of you are here: The DFC Lightweight Championship.

Hanes comes in here with what I would call a superior record than his opponent, although it is only better by virtue of having fought more fights, as both fighters have not lost yet. That said, “Crocodile” is on a brutal run of knocking his opponents out inside 40 seconds, something that definitely caught DFC’s notice – will we see a repeat tonight? Vinicius has dealt with a stand up focused fighter in his first fight however, where he dominated the fight before submitting him in round three after his opponent slipped out of quite a few attempted submissions.

It was an impressive display of control from the Spaniard, but it lacked that killer instinct of a champion, something Hanes has shown in abundance. I think Hanes will catch Vicious Vinny early and add another KO to his highlight reel.

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Tommy Hanes, Round 1 (TKO/KO)
Fight 4
Ulf Haug 3-0-0 v Yuri Cheryshev 2-0-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 265lbs
There is a reason so many heavyweight champions have been strike based fighters: the bigger you are, the harder you hit. We have the embodiment and the antithesis of that philosophy in this fight as boxing based striker Yuri Cheryshev takes on BJJ brown belt holder, Ulf Haug.

Cheryshev, in only two fights has demonstrated great ability to fight a diverse range of fighters. In fight number 1 he faced a great stand up fighter, of a similar ability level to himself. He knocked him out. Then he faced a submission specialist, in a BJJ brown belt, like Ulf Haug. He knocked him out. Notice the trend?

Haug, on the other hand has faced a series of great wrestlers in his three professional fights – demonstrating mastery over ground based combat. However, this fight is gonna bring him out of his comfort zone, and while I don’t wish to undermine his abilities at all, I just think that Cheryshev has this fight pinned down.

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Yuri Cheryshev, Round 1 (TKO/KO)
Fight 5
Ian Montgomery 1-0-0 v Myron “The Giant” Pillay 1-0-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 135lbs

So…Myron does realise he’s a bantam weight fighter yeah? One that isn’t even above 5 ft 9 inches tall? So what does “The Giant” refer to- ohhhhh I get it, Mrs Pillay must be a very lucky woman…

Back onto the topic at hand, I respect Pillay’s optimism that he could beat this fighter when he signed his DFC contract, but Montgomery has the edge in pretty much every department.

Knocking his opponent out in round number one, in minute number one, Montgomery has set an air of expectation around his DFC debut, people expect a quick KO from the 25 year old up and comer – and I don’t think Pillay has the skills to stop it.

I predict the winner of the fight will be Ian Montgomery, but I think the real winner is Mrs Pillay right? I’m surprised she can still walk…

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Ian Montgomery, Round 1 (TKO/KO)
Fight 6
Hari “The Kraken” Kunwar 3-2-0 v Dion “Brain Freeze” Jones 2-0-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 155lbs

Let’s be honest with ourselves here: if we wanted to watch a tightly regulated sport, with little controversy and general all round sportsmanship – we’d watch Golf. We don’t want that however, fight fans want the bad blood, the high tension, the storied rivalries and this is one of the first in DFC’s brief yet exciting history.

The first rematch in DFC EVER, Kunwar demanded a rematch after he felt there was dodgy officiating in his fight against Jones, who won by split decision albeit with Kunwar taking all three rounds on one judge’s scorecards. It was a close affair to be sure, and Jones accepted the challenge, presumably looking to put the issue to bed and to prove his superior skills.

According to Jones’ manager Leslie Smith on the DJ Toast podcast, Jones expects to knock Kunwar out cold: “DJ Toast: How does Dion plan to win tomorrow?”  “Leslie Smith: First round Knockout so make sure you get there early.” The Jones camp is in full confidence it seems, and they have no reason not to be in my opinion. Kunwar is a submission specialist, and could not get that deciding lock on the slippery Jones. I think that this time, Kunwar won’t have had enough time to reform another plan of attack and Jones – the superior striker could sneak in some heavy hits late into the fight, and finish it in round 3.

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Dion Jones, Round 3 (TKO/KO)

Fight 7
Jesus Malverde 0-0-0 v Paddy OHooligan 0-0-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 170lbs

I’d like to repeat my sentiments from earlier, and not just welcome these two highly touted teenage fighters to DFC – LV, but also to professional MMA, as both fighters are set to make their professional debut tonight. Predicting the outcome of a fight where you have no footage to go on whatsoever is always cruel on us pundits: you are damned if you get it wrong, and labelled as working on pure guesswork if you get it right.

This being said, both fighters have reportedly a great skillset and are hungry to succeed, so this fight should not disappoint.

Malverde, is a MT style Kickboxer, with phenomenal natural ability for someone who is just 18 – and he takes on a collegiate wrestler with a hell of an amateur record in OHooligan (you’d have to be great to get signed this young before a lot of collegiate fighters even graduate).

The range and high advantage clearly go to Malverde, to should have no trouble keeping OHooligan at bay with his kicks, while moving in and out of range. If logic dictates this fight, then I can only see Malverde’s hand getting raised.

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Jesus Malverde, Round 1 (TKO/KO)
Fight 8
Edd Palakiko 1-1-0 v “Rowdy” Rodney Mack 1-1-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 205lbs

Our two light heavyweight fighters here have both tasted the bitterness of defeat and the ambrosia of victory – they know that it takes a special kind of effort, luck and strategy to be successful and the learning experience for these two relative newcomers continues in anintriguing light heavyweight fight.

This fight is gonna be interesting to watch, because Palakiko, really has a skillset built for a good light heavyweight fighter, in the same vein as a Daniel Cormier: good boxing ability and great wrestling. The fists to beat someone onto the ground and the strength to keep them there.

“Rowdy” Rodney however is what you would call a straight up puncher however. With good boxing ability and some MT kickboxing mixed in there, I think he is gonna get the better of Palakiko on their feet.

I feel I could get called out for having a vendetta against wrestlers at some point, as I just realised I hardly pick them to win over out and out strikers or Jiu Jitsu practitioners, but it is nothing personal, I just think that Mack, having knocked out his opponent inside 40 seconds in his debut, has the edge to end it early that I don’t think Palakiko did display.

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Rodney Mack, Round 1 (TKO/KO)
Fight 9
Ethan Charlsworth 0-0-0 v Hector “The Spanish Assassin” Diaz 1-2-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 155lbs

Hector Diaz cannot catch a break. Without a win in DFC, it can only be a matter of time before fans start questioning his relevance, which in this writers opinion is unfair. Diaz has shown considerable guts, taking on two tough opponents in Varga, and tonights title challenger: Henry Teller. I expected Diaz to be able to bounce back, until I saw that he is facing an extremely highly touted kickboxer from London, England: Ethan Charlsworth.

Charlsworth may be making his pro debut here tonight, but his amateur career has created a lot of buzz, with some touting the 18 year old as one of the most promising MT Kickboxers in the organisation before his first fight. His ground game is a weakness though, something Diaz NEEDS to exploit if he wants to win this fight.

But given how suspect Diaz’s chin already is, I can’t help but think that Charlsworth is gonna catch him early and KO him. I admire ya Diaz, but the draw has not been kind to you man.

Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Ethan Charlsworth, Round 1 (TKO/KO)
Fight 10
Christian “Mighty Mouse” Crespo 2-3-0 v Justin Lichfield 3-0-0: 3 Rounds of 5 Minutes 265lbs

Did somebody say “EASIEST FIGHT TO PREDICT ON THE CARD”? …No? Ah…well in case anyone was wondering, this is that fight. Crespo has that Michael Bisping syndrome, of being a great all-rounder, but having nothing to answer the masters in one field (actually that might be a little harsh on the man now middleweight champion, but you get the gist).

Lichfield and his wrestling ability have been impressive so far in DFC, and having won his first two fights with relatively little difficulty (as little difficulty as fighting another human being into submission can be) and this is a trend I think will continue into this fight.

Oh man I am going to look like an idiot if I get this one wrong, fingers crossed right?
Gabe T.S. Gardner’s Prediction: (W) Justin Lichfield, Round 3 (SD/UD)

That is the longest preview I have ever done, and this wonder-card deserves it. DFC is consistently proving why we are the ones to watch right now – the wildcards in the shuffle. Sin City 6 is set to be a night to remember, so don’t forget to check it out.
