Event Review: BYFC 12: Bring on The Gold!!!!
BackYard Fight Club
2015-05-05, Sydney, Hyashi's Lounge - Sydney
Attendance:1,893, Event Rating:95
Author:Adam Leigh

A sold out crowd hit Hyashi's Lounge in Sydney where two thousand fight fans witnessed a multitude of finishes on May 5th, 2015. Only 2 out of 9 fights went the distance, which had five fighters tap out to an array of different submissions and two hit the canvas by way of clean knock outs. If there were awards up on the night, it would be a hard pick as there were some great finishes on display. In spectacular fashion all finishes came in the first round.

The wins included the Middleweight (185 lbs) and Heavyweight (265 lbs) Title holders retaining their status as the best in their respective divisions. The Interim Superheavyweight (265+ lbs) Champion was also decided, with long standing champion and the highest ranked P4P fighter in BYFC, Lee Norris, having to watch from outside the cage. :. Jenen def. Macbeth by Submission (Americana) at 1:40 of Round 1 to Retain the BackYard Fight Club Middleweight (185 lbs) Title .:

Both fighters in the Main event had already battled three times prior to this fight and Jenen was up in the head-to-head war 2-1. Both men were known finishers with Jenen having 10 submission wins under his belt and Macbeth finishing all of his winning fights via TKO. A finish was more than likely going in, and the fans weren’t disappointed.

It was a rather short fight for the Middleweight’s and the reigning champion shot in early for a takedown, improved his position on the ground into side control then used his superior BJJ skills to lock in the Americana and tap out the challenger. “The Captain” improved to 3-1 with BYFC and made his second consecutive title defence, yet his contract with BYFC ended with this fight.

With the Middleweight title possibly vacated and Brody Macbeth one of the higher ranked challengers in the division, we may just see the one time champion get another shot at the title before too long.

:.Horse def. Lewis by Submission (RNC) at 07:40 of Round 1 to Win the Interim BackYard Fight Club Superheavyweight (265+ lbs) Title

.: The Co-Main event saw the vacated BackYard Fight Club Interim Superheavyweight (265+ lbs) Title up for grabs, which pitted undefeated Horse against 2x Fight of the night recipient Lewis.

Between the men they had eleven wins coming into this fight, ten of them by way of finish. Statisticians had this stamina testing fight down to be an all-out-battle and most likely to end with a finish. They weren’t wrong.

Both fighters came out and had some good exchanges whilst standing yet Horse showed his better wrestling skills, taking Lewis down twice before hitting a massive suplex takedown, slamming Lewis down hard on the mat.

Horse followed up by taking the back of Lewis, flattening him out and landing with a barrage of ground and pound before taking the RNC from behind and Lewis having no choice but to tap out. Thunder “Revenge” Horse moved to 5-0 overall (2-0 BYFC) and walked out of the cage as the Interim BackYard Fight Club Superheavyweight (265+ lbs) Champion. This fight also puts Justin Lewis at back-to-back losses and without a contract.

:. Mt Olympus def. Wills by Decision (Unanimous) .: Mt Olympus was looking for his first win in his first fight with BYFC, and Wills was looking to score his first win overall, having lost all 4 fights (3 with BYFC) going into this Heavyweight match-up.

Mt Olympus dominated the first round with takedowns yet not much else eventuated besides working for a triangle mid-way yet Wills’ showed good sub defence throughout. Mt Olympus took Wills to the ground again early on in the second, yet Wills showed his will by trying for some sub attempts in a defensive position early on but without any luck.

Wills couldn’t stop Mt Olympus from taking him down again and it seemed Olympus was just toying with him, choosing to stand and shoot for takedowns as he pleased. The third round had Mt Olympus score yet another takedown early on and this time it had him on the back of Wills. Even though Mt Olympus was in a dominant position he did little to advance to a submission for the next three minutes.

The judge’s final decision was unanimous, all scoring 30-25 in the way of Mt Olympus in a dominant victory, yet the lack of excitement and activity had the crowd rather restless. Hess Mt Olympus got his first win whilst Joe Wills slipped to 5 straight losses, 4 with BYFC.

:. Fernandez def. Bin Ladin by Submission (Kimura) at 02:27 of Round 1 .: This Heavyweight match had the older and more experienced Fernandez up against the younger Bin Laden, although Bin Laden had won all of his 3 prior (2 BYFC) fights coming into this match up with BYFC first timer Fernandez.

Bin Laden came out trying to take Fernandez down yet it was Fernandez that eventually took the fight to the ground. Once Fernandez had his opponent down, he kept his control on the ground and tried for a handful of submissions before the kimura stuck and Bin Laden had to tap out. It wasn’t the most exciting fight, yet Fernandez showed his Brown Belt BJJ experience and submitted his man half way through the first round.

A dominant submission win. That makes it Obama Bin Laden’s first loss and Frank Fernandez’s first win with BYFC and 11 wins overall, including 10 by submission. :. Sumner def. Romu by Decision (Unanimous) .: In a battle of the undercard Heavyweights the inexperienced debutant Sumner faced Romu, who was on a three fight win streak. There were good punch exchanges early in the first round.

Sumner threw a lot of punches but missed just as much, dominating the round with his aggression. In the second round Romu came out swinging yet he barely landed anything substantial. Sumner clinched early in the round and landed some punches, and his dirty boxing in the clinches would ultimately be what gave him his first win.

Although, Romu took the second round as he was the more active and aggressive fighter. Sumner came out swinging in the third and landed some punches, pushing the fight to Romu for most of the round.

Romu fired back in the dyeing stages but it was little too late, Sumner taking the win by Unanimous Decision, 29-28 from all three judges. It wasn’t the most damaging fight for either competitor, yet it was very active and both fighters kept it standing which went down well with the packed crowd in attendance. Furi Romu’s contract ended with this fight.

:. Byrne def. Hofnaker by KO (Punch) at 03:36 of Round 1 to Retain the BackYard Fight Club Heavyweight (265 lbs) Title .: The 2x defending BackYard Fight Club Heavyweight Champion Byrne faced off against the fairly evenly matched challenger Hofnaker. Both men started evenly and kept the fight standing, exchanging strikes.

Hofnaker tried his luck with counter head kicks, attempting to clinch amongst some striking whilst Byrne mixed it up with his striking including combos and leg kicks. Hofnaker was cut with a combo just after the two minute mark of the first round before Byrnes unleashed a brutal left hook a minute and a half later that sent Hofnaker crashing to the canvas. Lights out, KO victory to Byrnes.

That makes it 7 straight wins (4-0 in BYFC) for the 3x defending BYFC Heavyweight (265 lbs) Champion Matt Byrne, who is also currently unsigned following tonight’s fight. :. Goodman def. Bohlander by KO (Punches) at 00:28 of Round 1 .: Goodman was coming off a loss going into his twenty-first match against the debutant Bohlander, and he wasted no time in returning to his winning ways.

A flurry of heavy punches ended Bohlander in the quickest knock out of the night! Not surprisingly it’s just the fifth fastest for the four time KO of the night winner. A tough way to start your career for Bohlander, yet an emphatic way to bounce back from a loss for Goodman. The fighter from New Mexico pleaded to management afterwards for a title shot and it’s no surprise why. Besides the currently unsigned Middleweight (185 lbs) title holder Brian Jenen, he’s the most hyped fighter in the division and tonight’s domination adds to his value in a big way.

:. Coyoca def. Vinci by Submission (Kimura) at 00:49 of Round 1 .: Both fighters made their Middleweight MMA debut in this fight that saw Coyoca dominate. Coyoca got the takedown, worked some ground and pound then applied a kimura to end the fight in just 49seconds, the second quickest finish in a night stacked with stoppages.

An impressive start in BYFC from the fighter from the Philippines. :. Ma Aka def. Bruce by Submission (Triangle) at 02:59 of Round 1 .: In a rematch from BYFC 11 where Bruce defeated Ma Aka by way of TKO in the first round, the New Zealand born fighter Ma Aka got an early takedown after blocking some early strikes from the American brawler Bruce. After a tussle on the ground between the two, “The God of War” Ma Aka was able to lock in a triangle and Bruce had no choice but to tap out.

That makes it one win a piece and although Ma Aka would be pleased to have rectified his loss, I’m sure both fighters will be looking for that one-up victory in the near future. Ma Aka is now 4-1 in BYFC (9-3 overall) and is in the best form in the Lightweight (155 lbs) division whilst that fight takes Bruce even in BYFC at 1-1 (5-7 overall).
