Event Preview: HEROIC 139
Steel Penn Fighting Temple
2014-02-22, Los Angeles, LA Memorial Colossuseum
Author:

Hello everyone I’m “Sunshine” Weston Markson, along with my partner Rudy “The Box” Knife, we are in the Heroic studio ready to discuss Heroic 139 which takes place this Saturday Feb, 22nd in the LA Memorial Colossuseum where we expect more then 93,000 fight fans to attend the event, and hundreds of thousands more watching at home LIVE on PPV.  This event is going to be a big one with a lot of title implications in almost every fight on the main card, and even a title fight!

Rudy:  Yes Weston that’s right this is going to be a wonderful night that could bring down some Heroic records.  The card is really dominated by two weight classes the SHW’s and the FW’s are going to rule the night 7 of the nights fights take place in those two divisions, and the biggest fights with the most implications are also in those divisions.  Enough though im ready and excited to get into these fights.  Oh by the way guys I have heard we have a familiar face stopping by next week!  So lets stay on the lookout for that.

MAIN EVENT

#3"The Ukrainian Zombie" Marko Kersikov (12-1)  v  #2 "The Power" Willy Stoppers (33-13)

Weston:  The main event of Heroic 139 is a SHW fight between the divisions 2nd ranked Willy Stoppers, and 3rd ranked Marko Kersikov.  This fight could lead us to the next number one contender for the title, with a new champion Gun Slinga crowned and a super fight lined up against the light-heavyweight champion, the winner of this fight could very well be the next in line for the winner of the Gun Slinga, Ryo Narushima fight.  Kersikov comes into this fight after suffering the first loss of his career, and losing the heavyweight title.  I know Kersikov is ready to prove he can get right back in the win column with a victory over 2nd ranked Stoppers, "The Power" has won 3 out of his last 4 fights, and is a former champion himself.  I know both of these great SHW fighters want that opportunity for another championship run and one of them will likely get the chance with a win, so who pulls out the win?

Rudy:  Two Huge men, two former champions, two great fighters, two strikers, and two KO artists.  These two men are KO crazy!  Its harder to think of two guys who throw harder and make their opponents drop faster then these two, they both have won over 90% of their fights by KO.   When you look at the fight they are pretty similar, they are both strikers who possess one strike KO Power, but they are also both accurate strikers landing in the mid 60%s in their fights.    Stoppers is the better kicker landing nearly 72% of his leg kicks, and Kersikov is the better puncher, Kersikov also has the better clinch game and this could come in very useful in trying to avoid the power of Stoppers Kersikov may clinch up and try to tire Stoppers out.  In a fight where one strike can end it I think everyone will need to keep their eyes glued to this action because it may end at that moment you look down to grab your beverage.

Prediction:  I think Kersikov wins by TKO.

CO-MAIN EVENT

#8 "Mr. Sub of the Night" Frankestein Mir (35-12)  v #5 Jefferson Davis "Boss" Hogg        (25-11)

Weston:  The CO-MAIN EVENT is another SHW fight with huge ramifications in the rankings and title picture.  This is without a doubt a title eliminator fight between the 5th ranked Jefferson Davis Hogg or (JDH) as I like calling him, and 8th ranked Frankestein Mir.  Mir is a former champion who just lost for the first time in 13 fights when he put his title on the line against now former champion Ernesto Oliveira.  Now I know Mir wants to put another streak together and another championship run, but standing in his way is another fighter who knows what its like to lose a title fight.  Since losing in what has been his only shot at the title so far JDH has put together a nice run that could get him back into title contention, with 4 straight wins after the disappointing title fight loss and 7 wins out of his last 8 fights JDH is staking his claim as one of the division’s best, and as one of the most consistent performers at SHW.

Rudy:  What I like most about this fight is both of these guys are just absolute wild men, Hogg is more of a striker, He lands 65% of his leg kicks, but with his boxing skills he just swings hard to try and end the fight, this is also with Mir does, Mir is not an accurate striker by any means, but he is effective, and has the ability to end the fight anywhere.  Mir has won 80% of his fights by stoppage 10 by TKO and 18 by Submission.    I think we will see Mir try to get this fight to the ground as soon as possible where he can work his GNP and Submissions.  I also think Hogg is going to look to get this fight in the clinch where he can use his Muy Thai skills to wear Mir down and take the fight out of him.

Prediction:  Hogg by decision.

MAIN EVENT

#7 Leonardo "Wrathchild" Ferreira (16-5) v #6 "Boran" Muay Thai (29-13)

Weston:  The last fight on the main card is a fight between former HW champion Muay Thai the 6th ranked SHW and the 7th ranked SHW and rising star Leonardo Ferreira.   Leonardo Ferreira has won 12 of his last 13 fights with the only loss coming at the hands of a former Heroic HW champion, after he won his last fight it was Ferreira saying he wanted a huge step up in competition and called out Muay Thai.  It wasn’t long ago that Muay Thai was the best Heavyweight in the world.  Now after losing two straight fights Thai could be at a cross roads, he is still one of the best fighters and a beast in the SHW division,  but with another loss he could fall out of title contention for the foreseeable future.   Still even with losing his last two fights, Thai has an 8-3 record, is a two time champion, and has a spot as a member of the Heroic hall of fame when you look at his losses they have all been to current and former Heroic champions.

Rudy:  That says something right there Weston, all of his losses have been to champions,  and he has won 6 fights against current and former champions, Thai is without a doubt one of the best fighters in the history of the big fellas divisions, but Ferreira is a rising star and I will tell you why.  Its simple, there are two reasons, one POWER, and two ACCURACY!  Ferreira has shown the fine art working together these two attributes.  “Wrathchild” has finished 15 out of his 16 wins by (T)KO, and he happens to be one of the most accurate strikers not just in the SHW division but in all of MMA, he lands over 85% of all head punches, and nearly 80% of leg kicks.  Its his ability to find his opponent time after time that allows him to set up the knockout so easily.  Thai is also a accurate striker showing above average ability to land strikes although not as accurate as his opponent Thai has shown the ability to land the perfect strike at the fight time so send his opponents crashing to the mat.  Thai has won 76% of his fights by (T)KO.   I think we will see a great battle on the outside, Thai will use his elite kicking ability to keep Ferreira back, while Ferreira will look to wear Thai down with strong accurate strikes and counters.

Prediction:  I Think Thai wins this one by late TKO.

#2 "Personal" Rainer Varvaskoukku     (21-10-2)  v  #C/1 Adam Gracie (25-10-1)   145 lbs title

Weston:  Well up next we have a fight that was suppose to happen on the last card, a featherweight title fight between champion Adam Gracie, and Challenger Rainer Varvaskoukku.  As I stated this fight was suppose to happen on the last card, but on the flight in Rainer Varvaskoukku got really sick and was unable to fight.  The fight was immediately rescheduled and now we are ready to see this one finally happen!

Rudy:  The wait for this fight has been intensified having to wait another week for a great fight between two amazing featherweights has only made me want to see this one more.  There have been a lot of rumors floating around about Rainer and the sickness, when it was first announced some people were saying he had caught the swine flu, others were saying he had a really bad case of crabs.  There were even some rumors that Rainer needed an extra week to peak in his training and knew that Gracie had already peaked, so to throw Gracie off he faked an illness so he wouldn’t be peaking fight time.  Then there was the rumor that Rainer stubbed his toe getting out of the shower and wanted to be 100% for the title fight.  Whatever the truth be im ready for this fight to happen its going to be an awesome title fight.

Prediction:  I think ill take Gracie this time around.

#3 Will “The Beast” Banks (31-19-1)  v  #6 "The Illuminated One" Ahiga Otaktay (39-13)

Rudy:  The next fight on the main card is a featherweight fight between 3rd ranked Will Banks and 6th ranked Ahiga Otaktay.  Obviously this fight has title implications, who knows the winner may even earn the next shot at the title but only time will tell on that one, I do know for sure it’s a title eliminator so whoever does win will be one step closer to earning a shot at the champion.  Will Banks comes into this fight having won his last 4 fights against some of the top guys in the division.  Otaktay has been up and down lately but you cant ever count him out.  I think Banks will look to get this fight to the ground with his 47% takedowns success and over 5 attempts per fight I expect this fight to hit the ground at least once.  Otaktay on the other hand I think will try to keep the fight standing where he can use his Muay Thai and boxing to outwork Banks and look for the KO.

Prediction:  I think Banks keeps his winning streak alive.

Shane Carwin (25-18)  v “Lucky” Elroy Kleinschmidt (17-11)

Weston:  For the first fight on the main card we have two guys known for the Knockout, whether it be by delivering the knockout or being on the receiving end of one.  These two combine for 33 knockout wins, and 26 knockout losses.  I think we should look for a fight that takes place mostly on the feet but don’t be surprised to see Elroy take the fight to the ground and attempt to grind out his opponents energy and work for the submission or GNP stoppage.  This is one of those fights that will be exciting because both guys are good fighters with power, skill, and near glass chins.

Prediction:  I think Elroy wins this fight by TKO.
