Last Saturday’s card saw the heavyweight title on the line, as well as a couple of key middleweight match-ups at Alien Invasion 13 – The Docks. I’m your writer, Ernie White, and I’m here to bring you a closer look at what transpired over the weekend.

The main card was kicked off with a heavyweight bout between massive giants Frank Castle and Frank Schrank. Both men knew coming in that Castle would have to get this fight to the mat, or he would have a tough time winning it. However, it didn’t start well for Castle, who failed three attempts to bring the fight to the mat in the first two minutes, while Shrank was having a field day on the feet, busting Castle open quickly. He did manage to get a takedown into side control just after the two minute mark, but Schrank’s defense held strong, and he finished the round on top after a failed leg lock attempt from Castle. The second round started off as much of the same, with Castle’s cut getting even worse. He managed to land another takedown into side control, but Shrank re-guarded and eventually managed to sweep. This time, he underestimated the big man’s ability off of his back, as Castle landed a beautiful hip bump sweep into mount, where he teed off until the ref stopped it.

Result: Frank Castle def. Frank Schrank via TKO (Strikes) at 4:54 of round 2.

Three minutes of back and forth action between Frederick Barbarossa and Wilco Van Duijnhoven earned them both Fight of the Night honours. As the fight started out, neither man had any interest in taking it to the ground. The early action saw Van Duijnhoven digging in with nasty leg kicks while Barbarossa struggled to find his range with punches. Van Duijnhoven decided to switch things up and moved into the Muay Thai clinch, where he started landing some nasty knees. One of them clearly buckled Barbarossa, and Van Duijnhoven broke from the clinch to gain room to tee off. But he got careless, and Barbarossa came in with a short punch that sent him reeling backwards. Still rocked, Barbarossa charged at him with an explosive combination and Van Duijnhoven crumbled under the pressure.

Result: Frederick Barbarossa def. Wilco Van Duijnhoven via TKO (Strikes) at 2:58 of round 1.

When Hironobu Uematsu and Thomas Fu first met for the title back at Alien Invasion 8, they engaged in an ultra-competitive three round war that ended with a TKO win for Uematsu. This time, the fight was not quite as long or competitive. Thomas Fu came out as the aggressor, looking to land lots of kicks. However, Uematsu did a good job defending those strikes and coming back with counters of his own. Fu was clearly getting frustrated, and after finally landing a solid head kick, he got over aggressive trying to follow up. A missed body shot from Fu was countered with a straight right hand that buckled him. He kept moving forward, but Uematsu slipped a jab, cross combination and countered with a stiff cross of his own, shutting out the lights and earning him Knockout of the Night.

Result: Hironobu Uematsu def. Thomas Fu via KO (Punch) at 3:46 of round 1.

The first time Gary Goodridge met Zell Griever, he managed to get his takedowns, but was unable to score any points on the ground, and all five rounds ended up going to Griever, as well as his FC heavyweight title. Now getting a rematch, he didn’t change up his strategy too much, still aggressively going for takedowns. However, once he got the fight there, he was much more active with strikes from the top. The first round went to Goodridge, as he spent more than 4 minutes on top. Griever defended well, but Goodridge was in control throughout the round. In the second round, Goodridge got top position even quicker, scoring a takedown after slipping an uppercut from Griever. Spending the whole round on top, it was two rounds in the books for the challenger. Another early takedown landed in the third for Goodridge, but Griever managed to reverse the position and get on top. From there, he stalled for a referee stand-up, and finally had a chance to work his striking, as he outclassed Goodridge on the feet for the final 4 minutes of the round. The fourth round stayed on the feet for about a minute and a half before Goodridge got a takedown, and the fight remained there for another minute and a half, as the fighters did absolutely nothing until the ref got back from his smoke break and finally stood them up. In the final minute, Griever landed a few more strikes and stuffed a couple takedown attempts to seal the round. Headed into the final round, it was tied two apiece. Goodridge did a good job defending himself on the feet, but it was clear who was the better striker throughout the first half of the round. Finally, Goodridge got a takedown into side control, and he refused to let Griever back up. Instead, he managed to get mount in the final minute, which likely swayed the judges his way.

Result: Gary Goodridge def. Zell Griever via unanimous decision (48-47 x3) to become the new FC heavyweight champion of the world.

Submission of the night went to Slevin Goode, who scored the night’s only submission. After a slow back-and-forth two rounds against Jesus Jones, Goode appear to be on his way to losing a decision, especially after Jones landed a flashy hip throw late in the round. But Goode quickly got back to guard, and secured a slick armbar with just five seconds remaining.
