Event Preview: UPF-LA: 1 Lopez vs Calvancante
Ultimate Pit Fighting - Los Angeles (ID 190K+)

Author:Jack LaBear

There is a lot of excitement in the air. Ultimate Pit Fighting - Los Angeles kicks off this coming Saturday, May 11th at The Underground in LA. This is the inaugural event for the UPF-LA and it promises to be an action packed card. Let's take a closer look at the upcoming event:

The night starts off with a light-heavyweight fight between "The Monster" Martin Myers (2-1) and Butcher "TKDO" Luca (0-0).

The untested Luca will be facing a rusty Meyers who hasn't fought since last year, and Meyers will also be moving up in weight divisions. Meyers has fought in both the 145lb and 155lb divisions and is still a little light to be fighting in the 170lb division. Will Meyers overcome the bigger man? Or, will Luca make him wish he was still facing smaller adversaries?

Hole in your Pocket (HIYP) odds: Meyers -199, Luca +160

Next, we have a heavyweight fight between Tim "Low Down" Lewis (0-0) and Braulio Silva (5-4-1)

Silva is looking to return to his winning ways after a disappointing loss and a draw in his last two fights. Lewis is making his MMA debut appearance. Silva who prefers to fight on the ground may have his hands full if he ends up on the ground with Lewis who holds a brown belt in jiu jitsu. Silva may just try to make his small stand up advantage work for him, but experience really is leaning in Silva's direction. Will Silva make his experience work for him or will the newcomer Lewis prevail?

HIYP odds: Lewis +106, Silva -130

Finishing off the undercard, we have a light heavyweight fight between Tug "The Man" Wood (0-2) and Robbie Stone (3-1)

Stone is looking to bounce back after losing a title shot in his last fight in the now defunct org "Conflict Fighting Championship" in Las Vegas. This is Wood's first test outside of QFC fights. Wood holds a distinct advantage if this fight stays standing. But Stone, who is known for his ground game should be looking to take this fight to the mat. Where this fight is fought should determine the outcome.

HIYP odds: Wood +174, Stone -217

We start the main card with a heavyweight fight between Fedor "Last Emperor" Emelianenko (2-0) and "Big" Bob Thorn (1-0)

Both fighters are looking to remain undefeated. Emelianenko will be trying to take the fight to the ground as he is no match for Thorn on his feet. Thorn will be looking to pepper his opponent with punches while trying to avoid the takedown. Who will come out on top and keep their record perfect? Too close to call.

HIYP odds:  Emelianenko -102, Thorn -120

Next we have a light heavyweight fight between "Lights Out" Toki Mazuke (4-3) and Lenzi Tapera (4-0)

Both fighters in this one are well balanced fighters with Mazuke holding the edge in the stand up, but Tapera has the advantage on the ground. Tapera has dominated his competition in QFc fights, and this fight should be his first real test. Will Tapera come out on top and remain undefeated or will Mazuke spoil his night and walk away with the victory?

HIYP odds: Mazuke +122, Tapera =150

The last fight on the main card is a bantamweight fight between Carl "CJ" Johnson (4-0) and Kari Parisyen (3-0)

Both fighters are hoping to remain undefeated. This fight should be fought mainly on the ground as both fighters are lacking in stand up skills; this will be Wrestling against Jiu Jitsu. Parisyen has finished every opponent he has faced by submission in the first round, while Johnson has proved he has the stamina to go the distance. Will Parisyen score another quick submission or will Johnson wear him out and outscore him for a decision?

HIYP odds: Johnson -135, Parisyen +111

The Co-main event is a light heavyweight fight between Carlos Jos Ricci (6-4) and "The Iron Captain" Victorian Greyjoy (6-4)

This is a very interesting fight, Greyjoy holds a distinct advantage on his feet but seems to prefer to fight on the ground. Jos Ricci is a ground and pound specialist who also has some submission skills. Jos Ricci will be trying to put his powerful takedowns to work, but he will have to be careful not to be submitted himself as four of Greyjoy's wins have come via submission.

HIYP odds: Jos Ricci -170: Greyjoy +138

And finally we have our main event, a middleweight fight between Mauricio "Pitbull" Calvancante (9-4) and "Hurricane" Jose Lopez (5-3)

Lopez is moving down in weight class; he has been fighting as a light heavyweight and this will be his first fight as a middleweight. Calvancante holds a huge advantage if this fight goes to the ground; Lopez should be trying to keep the fight standing at all costs. Lopez will try to put his Muay Thai to good use here; he will be throwing a lot of kicks. Calvancante has eight submissions in his nine wins and will be trying to finish Lopez who, as of yet, has never been finished.

Ultimate Pit Fighting - Los Angeles would like to thank Jose Lopez for coming over from UPF-Hilo for this one fight. Also, a special welcome to Carlos Jos Ricci and Mauricio Calvancante who are both ex UPF-Hilo fighters who have joined us here in LA.
