UPF 23: Smile You're on P.P.V was a mixed martial arts event held by Ultimate Pit Fighting on February 23, 2013 at The Pipeline arena in Hilo, Hawaii.

Preliminary Card

-[Light-heavyweight bout] David Maher (4-4) (1-3 UPF) vs. San Sebastian (0-2) (0-1 UPF)
-[Review] Whoa. There wasn't really much to see here as David Maher came in and took care of business. Maher lit Sebastian up with strikes and capped it off by knocking him out in just twelve seconds.
-[Result] Maher def. Sebastian via KO (Strikes) at 0:12 of round 1.

-[Middleweight bout] Scott Banks (8-3) (3-1 UPF) vs. Repo Lakunen (0-2) (0-1 UPF)
-[Review] After a grappling heavy first round that saw both fighters landing takedowns, banks kept his distance in the second and went to work. With mere seconds remaining in the second round, Banks rocked, dropped, and finished Repo Lakunen.
-[Result] Banks def. Lakunen via TKO (Strikes) at 4:57 of round 2.

-[Welterweight bout] Robert Smith (15-8) (3-4 UPF) vs. Maxim Markov (5-3) (3-2 UPF)
-[Review] Robert Smith knew that the last thing he wanted was to let Markov take him down and work his advanced Jujitsu game on him. To counter this he took Markov into the clinch and started pegging him with shots. After Markov kept pushing for the takedown, Smith pushed away and landed some strikes that rocked Maxim Markov and eventually knocked him out cold.
-[Result] Smith def. Markov via KO (Punch) at 0:48 of round 1.

-[Middleweight bout] Harry Kalizhnikov (11-7) (6-2 UPF) vs. Mauricio Calvancante (8-3) (4-3 UPF)
-[Review] Calvancante didn't really get to do much here. He pushed for takedown after takedown but he never quite managed to catch one. Harry played a very tight Muay Thai game in response. He landed leg kick after leg kick, beautiful punch combinations, and every single head shot he attempted landed on the button. The last one left Calvancante unconscious at his feet for the victory.
-[Result] Kalizhnikov def. Calvancante via TKO (Strikes) at 1:48 of round 1.

-[Heavyweight bout] Lincoln Burrows (7-4) (4-4 UPF) vs. Bobby Haley (7-3) (3-2 UPF)
-[Review] This was a true battle of the knockout artist versus submission artist. All seven of Burrows' victories have come via first or second round KO. All seven of Haley's victories have come via first or second round submission, most notably via Kimura or Armbar. See any trends here? Haley never got the opportunity to attempt that life saving takedown that could secure his place in the victory books. Instead, Burrows did what he always does which meant a first round knockout of Bobby Haley.
-[Result] Burrows def. Haley via KO (Punches) at 1:23 of round 1.

Main Card

-[Bantamweight Championship bout] Hype Williams(c) (11-6) (4-1 UPF) vs. Tony Goldman (7-4) (6-3 UPF)
-[Review] Midway through the first round, Goldman landed a takedown and started attempting takedowns on the defending champion. It appeared as though the champion might be in trouble but he clearly dominated the entirety of the rest of the fight with his excellent striking. He rocked Goldman late in the second and was stopped only by the end of the round. In the final minute of the third round, he caught Goldman with a powerful right hook and followed up with more strikes forcing the referee to step in and save Goldman from taking more punishment.
-[Result] Williams def. Goldman via TKO (Strikes) at 4:16 of round 3 to retain the world bantamweight championship!

-[Light-heavyweight Championship bout] Hugo Llorente(c) (3-0) (3-0 UPF) vs. Rickson Gracie (10-2) (6-1 UPF)
-[Review] Before you ask: no, not that Rickson Gracie. However this Rickson Gracie is among the most successful fighters in UPF history with all of his fights under the UPF banner being championship fights. He successfully defended his title six times before this contest. It comes as a complete shock to me that neither fighter attempted a takedown in this fight. It's especially considering how badly the champion was out struck over the course of this fight. Llorente landed punches and kicks galore in a complete shut out victory. At the end of the fight, the scoring was really just academic as everyone knew who the champion clearly was.
-[Result] Llorente def. Gracie via Unanimous Decision to become the new UPF light-heavyweight champion of the world!

-[Heavyweight Championship bout] Helge Fossmo(c) (13-5) (4-0 UPF) vs. Rutger Crax (8-3) (6-3 UPF)
-[Review] Heavyweight champion Helge Fossmo dominated this fight. He took former champion Rutger Crax down and pounded him until he was a bloody mess a la Cain vs Bigfoot. The referee called a halt to the action so that the doctor could check out what was left of Rutger's face and the doctor deemed him unfit to continue.
-[Result] Fossmo def. Crax via TKO (Cut) at 1:55 of round 1 to retain the world heavyweight championship!

-[Middleweight Championship bout] Tony Brown (9-1) (7-0 UPF) vs. Stefan Pruvhe (5-3) (5-2 UPF)
-[Review] Despite the fact that middleweight champion Tony Brown holds an enormous advantage on the ground and Stefan Pruvhe is a drastically better boxer, Pruvhe took the fight to the ground and almost immediately got submitted. I don't know what the mindset or game plan of Pruvhe was but I really think his strategist should ask for assistance ASAP.
-[Result] Brown def. Pruvhe via Submission (Triangle) at 1:40 of round 1 to retain the world middleweight championship!

-[Welterweight Championship bout] Jake Tyler (28-11) (5-0 UPF) vs. Slim Shady (8-4-1) (2-2 UPF)
-[Review] With five UPF fights all being championship fights, Jake Tyler successfully defended his title once again against the artist formerly known as Slim Shady. Slim never got much offense off as the technique of Jake Tyler was just too oppressive for him.
-[Result] Tyler def. Shady via Submission (Kimura) at 4:26 of round 3 to retain the world welterweight championship!
