#TD# Sultan is trying to trip Smith. He has hold of a leg but Smith is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Sultan persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Smith utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Sultan works over Smith with some ground and pound from guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.#SUB# Sultan drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Sultan jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Sultan is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. #SUB2# Sultan avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Sultan postures up and lands a big shot to Smith's brow. #T1# Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sultan's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Smith working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Sultan. Sultan wants to pass the guard but Gates is defending well. Gates is looking for a sweep. Sultan is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Gates moves into full guard.
Sultan chips away with some ground and pound. Sultan cracks Gates with a solid left hand. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sultan makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Sultan missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Sultan cracks Gates with a solid left hand. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Dudley has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Sultan shoots in but Dudley avoids the takedown attempt easily. Dustin Sultan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.#TD# Sultan closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Sultan lands in his opponent's guard. Dudley lands a decent elbow from side control. The strikes coming from Dudley are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Dudley wants to stand but Sultan has his arm trapped. Dudley trying to control the action but Sultan is working from the bottom. Dudley working away. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. #R1##TD# Sultan drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Stpierre explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there! #TD# Sultan throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Stpierre was covering up waiting for the punch and Sultan finishes the takedown easily into guard. #SUB2# Stpierre has his foot on Sultan's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sultan works his way back into a safe position though. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Sultan advances to half guard. #SUB# Sultan has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Stpierre defend it? Sultan steps over the head and cranks it - Stpierre is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Sultan!
