PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Steve Marino (ranked 3339 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kimbo Slice (ranked 4760 p4p, 0 weight class). Marino comes to the cage accompanied by "Real American" by Rick Derringer. On his way into the cage it seems that Steve Marino has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Steve Marino seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Steve Marino!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kimbo Slice!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Slice tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Marino paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Marino is looking to counter the offense by Slice and move into the clinch.
Marino shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Slice sprawls well. Slice wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Marino gets slowly back to his feet.
Slice swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Marino shoots in but no luck this time.
Slice is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Marino fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Slice avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Marino. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Marino keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Slice lands with an overhand left.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Slice moves in looking to clinch but Marino pushes him off.

Marino closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Slice did well to prevent Marino getting side control.

Slice has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Marino is working away from the top position though.

Slice pushes Marino off looking to stand but Marino dives back in and keeps control.

It looks like Marino is going to stand back up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Marino prevents Slice from improving his position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Slice tries to clinch but Marino is having none of it.
Slice lands a slapping body shot.

Marino looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Slice!
Marino is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Slice will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Marino tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

Slice wants to control but Marino postures up.
Slice is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Marino just content to control the position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Slice slaps away a takedown attempt from Marino, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Slice lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Slice scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Steve Marino seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Slice stuffs the takedown attempt from Marino. Marino gets slowly back to his feet.
Slice feints the counter takedown.
Marino is breathing heavily.
Slice lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Slice.
Marino shoots in but no luck this time.

We've been told by Marino's head coaches at Cozad MMA Los Angeles that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Slice lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Slice has a takedown stuffed.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kimbo Slice dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Slice shoots in for a takedown but Marino shows good takedown defense.

Marino shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Marino showed some decent athleticism there.

Slice has one foot on Marino's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Marino closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Slice did well to prevent Marino getting side control.

Marino postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Marino would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Marino not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Slice has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Marino has passed into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
You can see the frustration on Slice's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Marino is looking to take a break and control but Slice is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Marino lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Slice down.
Marino takes a little break here. Slice wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Slice is looking to regain half guard here but Marino keeps moving and retains side control.

Slice is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Marino happy to just control the position for now.
Slice wants to control but Marino postures up.

Marino is trying to get an arm triangle but Slice is defending well.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Slice is trying to control Marino's posture but Marino avoids it.
Slice is trying to escape the position but Marino is controlling the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Slice tries to clinch but Marino moves out of range.
Marino jinks towards his opponent looking like he wants to counter with a mid kick but doesn't commit.
Marino with a poor takedown
and Slice counters with a three punch combo that has Marino backing up. Marino nods at Slice to acknowledge the strikes.
Jab, jab by Slice - just one landing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Slice changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Marino tries to avoid it but Slice manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Marino to the ground. Marino escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Slice cracks the inside of Marino's front leg.
Slice tries to clinch up but Marino circles away and keeps his distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Kimbo Slice will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

And Slice tries to counter it with a takedown but Marino pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Slice is looking to clinch but Marino is avoiding it.
Slice throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Marino's waist but Marino gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Slice off to one side.
Marino shoots for a double leg takedown but Slice sprawls well. He's pushed Marino's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Slice shoots in for a takedown but Marino shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Marino swats away the attempt to clinch by Slice.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Slice is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Marino went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

Slice wants to get back to his feet but Marino passes into half guard.
Steve Marino has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kimbo Slice.


Marino is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Slice defends it well.
Marino working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Marino is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Marino seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Marino prevents Slice from standing back up.
Slice really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Marino. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Slice pushes Marino off and gets back to his feet.

Slice gets caught napping as Marino dives in and scores a takedown. Slice manages to retain guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Marino slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Slice is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Marino off and has taken his back!

Slice has got his arm under Marino's chin working for the choke… has he got it? It looks pretty tight! Oh! Marino has spun round into Slice's guard beautifully! Well done that man!
Slice has his hands on Marino's head, controlling the position.

Marino is in close to Slice's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Marino passes Slice's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Marino seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Marino is nestled in close to Slice, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

And that's the end of the fight!
Steve Marino showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Slice has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
