PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Walter Hairyman (ranked 1553 p4p, 218 weight class) and Jonathan Boaler (ranked 1623 p4p, 227 weight class). Jonathan Boaler told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boaler shoots in for a double leg but Hairyman sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Hairyman wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Boaler doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Hairyman counters with a three punch combo that has Boaler backing up. Boaler nods at Hairyman to acknowledge the strikes.
Nice takedown defense from Hairyman. No joy for Boaler on that attempt.
We've been told by Hairyman's head coaches at Island Hammers Fight Camp that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Walter Hairyman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonathan Boaler.
Boaler tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Hairyman swivels and escapes.
Jab, jab by Hairyman - just one landing.
Boaler fails with the takedown
and Hairyman counters with a one-two to the body.

Boaler is rocked!

Boaler pushes Hairyman up against the cage in a clinch.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Boaler working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hairyman doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hairyman manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Boaler throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Hairyman escapes and throws Boaler's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Hairyman decides to stand up, so the ref orders Boaler to his feet.
Boaler fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Hairyman dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Hairyman lands with a good body shot.

Boaler shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Hairyman can't keep his opponent in guard - Boaler advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Hairyman knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Boaler on the ground.
Hairyman is controlling Boaler's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Boaler is looking to advance position but Hairyman won't allow it.

Boaler wants to work for an arm triangle but Hairyman is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Boaler seems to be looking for submissions.
Hairyman on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hairyman tries to get out of the position.
Boaler uses his free foot to push down on Hairyman's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Hairyman.
