PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Johnson (ranked 6177 p4p, 423 weight class) and Deontay Fury (ranked 6699 p4p, 445 weight class). Daniel Johnson looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Daniel Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Deontay Fury!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Francis DeMontford and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fury gets caught napping as Johnson dives in and scores a takedown. Fury manages to retain guard.

Johnson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Fury is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Johnson is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Johnson has gone for a leg lock! Fury slips out almost immediately though and dives into Johnson's guard.

Johnson is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at MONEY TEAM!!! that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.

Fury wants to get up but he can't break Johnson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Fury manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Johnson on his heels. He'll look to pass Johnson's guard now, I'm sure.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Johnson is trying to control Fury's posture but Fury avoids it.

Johnson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Fury manages to get himself to full guard.


Johnson drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Johnson jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Fury is trying to keep Johnson in close.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Johnson wants to pass the guard but Fury is keeping the position.
Fury bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Johnson's guard.

Deontay Fury showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Fury feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Johnson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Fury defends well.
Johnson has his hands on Fury's head, controlling the position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Fury accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Fury gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Fury looking to sit in guard and control but Johnson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Fury is trying to control the position from the bottom.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Fury is on top in guard.

Johnson wants to sweep here but Fury controlling him for the moment.

Fury sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Johnson's guard.

Fury is pressing down on Johnson's thigh, looking to free his foot. Johnson is holding on for now.
Fury wants to stand but Johnson has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Fury seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Johnson does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Fury is looking to take a break and control but Johnson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Fury looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Johnson is looking for a sweep. Fury is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Fury seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Johnson does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Fury fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Johnson sprawls well initially but Fury persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Fury might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Johnson haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Daniel Johnson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Deontay Fury is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Deontay Fury comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Fury has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
