PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mario Diaz (ranked 1819 p4p, 210 weight class) and Karl Henriksen (ranked 1796 p4p, 224 weight class). Diaz comes to the cage accompanied by Troublesome '96 - 2pac. Henriksen has chosen OST Vikings - If I Had a Heart as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mario Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Karl Henriksen!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz avoids the head kick by Henriksen.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Henriksen has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Diaz throws a series of punches but Henriksen moves out of range.
Diaz throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Henriksen.
Despite the aggression on Henriksen's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Henriksen showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Diaz.
Diaz rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Henriksen moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Nice shot lands for Diaz.
A punch combination from Diaz misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Diaz throws a right and a left that Henriksen avoids nicely.

Diaz clinches with his opponent.
Henriksen jumps guard but Diaz turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Diaz misses with some punches.

Diaz misses with a hook to the ribs.
Henriksen has Diaz pressed against the cage, preventing Diaz from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Diaz escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Henriksen.

Diaz has managed to clinch.
Diaz gets through Henriksen's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Henriksen tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Diaz smiles and moves away.
Mario Diaz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Karl Henriksen.
Diaz avoids the head kick by Henriksen.
Diaz misses with a body shot.
Diaz misses the shot to the body.
Diaz moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromHenriksen.

Diaz tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Henriksen paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Henriksen plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
A combination from Diaz does no damage.
Henriksen shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Diaz looks to land a combination but Henriksen avoids it well.
Diaz misses with a body kick.
Diaz misses with a two punch combination.
Mario Diaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Diaz throws a series of strikes that have Henriksen backpedaling.
Henriksen avoids a punch combination nicely.
Henriksen throws an overhand right that lands on Diaz's shoulder, as Diaz tries to avoid the shot.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The crowd cheers as Diaz lands an impressive looking overhand right. Henriksen doesn't seem phased though.
Diaz lands with a nice combination. Henriksen backs away looking to recover.
Diaz tries to bum rush Henriksen with a series of wild strikes but Henriksen uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Diaz takes the fight into the clinch.

Henriksen pulls guard.
Diaz's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Henriksen is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Diaz defends well.
Diaz would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Diaz is posturing up here but Henriksen has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Diaz tries to roll out but it's too tight and Diaz has to tap! Slick submission there by Henriksen!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Karl Henriksen!
Karl Henriksen seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
