PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Darrick Castaneda (ranked 6775 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Torres (ranked 4585 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that John Torres was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Castaneda takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Torres lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Torres misses with a few strikes there.
Castaneda blocks the body kick.
Castaneda walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Castaneda doesn't succeed with the takedown
enabling Torres to counter with a crisp jab.
Torres throws a solid leg kick but Castaneda takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Torres.

and Torres makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Torres closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Castaneda has Torres pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Torres manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Castaneda quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
Darrick Castaneda seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Castaneda's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Torres connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Castaneda scrambles back to his feet.

Castaneda misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Castaneda is breathing heavily.

Torres darts in and clinches Castaneda up against the cage.
Torres gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Castaneda.

Torres digs a right hand underneath Castaneda's ribcage. Castaneda let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Castaneda is trying to drag Torres to the mat but Torres just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Torres moves into range and clinches up with Castaneda.

Torres would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Torres's corner calls for a 1-2. Torres obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Torres rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Castaneda moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Torres stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Torres wants it to stay on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Castaneda's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

A looping hook to the body misses from Castaneda. Torres does a little dance to reset his feet.

Castaneda throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Torres's waist but Torres gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Castaneda off to one side.

Castaneda closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Castaneda lands in his opponent's guard.
Castaneda not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Castaneda's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Castaneda fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Torres avoids it really well and circles away.
