The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Toews on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Darin Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
We've been told by Toews's head coaches at Hilo Hit Squad that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Toews has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Smith avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

A frustrated look appears on Smith's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Toews lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Toews in side control lands a decent elbow.
Toews scoring with punches and elbows.
Toews scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Smith to see if he's OK.
Smith tries to buck Toews off but Toews is having none of it.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Toews swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Smith is now in Toews's guard. A big mistake from Toews there, giving up the dominant position!

Smith wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Toews's closed guard. He's half up but Toews has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Toews pivots and extends the arm, Smith falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Toews! Well done that man!
