PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marin Ivanov (ranked 2506 p4p, 316 weight class) and Bung Popper (ranked 1355 p4p, 191 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Marin Ivanov has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Marin Ivanov seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Marin Ivanov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Bung Popper!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Cecil Peabody and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Popper slaps away a takedown attempt from Ivanov, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Popper feints and then cracks Ivanov's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Ivanov down.

Ivanov shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Ivanov showed some decent athleticism there.
Ivanov thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Popper's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ivanov wants to work for an arm triangle but Popper is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Popper wants to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ivanov is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Popper defends it well.
Ivanov thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Ivanov is looking for a kimura but Popper is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ivanov to get the leverage.
Ivanov throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Popper felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Ivanov has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Ivanov is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Popper sees it coming and defends easily.

Ivanov has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Popper has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Ivanov is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Ivanov has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Popper after a bit of a struggle.

Popper breaks from the clinch.
Ivanov looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Popper only half commits to the counter leg kick.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marin Ivanov. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ivanov shoots for a takedown but Popper saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Popper misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Ivanov tries to counter with a takedown but Popper is quick to defend against it.

Popper buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Popper scores with a shot to the body.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Popper dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Ivanov. That did some damage!

Ivanov closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Popper to the mat! Popper manages to get full guard.
Ivanov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Popper swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Ivanov drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Popper dives on top into guard.


Popper stands and steps away. Ivanov gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Popper displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Ivanov.
Ivanov walks into a jab.
Popper jabs Ivanov to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Popper with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Ivanov on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Popper lands with a shot to the body.
Popper throws the kick towards the body but Ivanov avoids it.
Ivanov has his takedown stuffed
and Popper counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Popper changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Ivanov shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Popper as he jumps to the side.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Popper throws a nice head kick!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ivanov with a lazy takedown attempt
and Popper makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Ivanov is breathing heavily.
Nice cross by Popper.
Popper connects with a single shot there.


Ivanov is rocked!
Popper throws a pinpoint strike between Ivanov's hands that connects right on the jaw and sends Ivanov crashing to the floor! He's out before he even hits the mat and Popper scores a great knockout victory!
